Hi,
How should I deal with my parents spreading false gossip to other family members about me and my husband? I haven’t said a word to any relatives about the drama going on in my family (which has given my parents the upper hand). I’m sure everyone will believe their lies and yet I am scared to stick up for myself because I don’t want to gossip. What do I do? I love my relatives and yet now they are being turned against me. If we talk it’s usually me who initiated the conversation.:confused::confused:

I am so sorry that this is going on. 😦 It is not wrong to clear your own name, as long as it is done charitably and without dragging down other people.

I also recommend that you take this time to unite your suffering with that of Christ. In the words of Saint John Paul the Great, “don’t waste your suffering.”

Remember the lies and gossip that our Lord was subject to before his crucifixion, and focus on His deep humility.

The following prayer has helped bring me great peace of mind and helped me to let go of much worry in regards to humiliation, lies, gossip, misunderstanding, etc… I highly recommend adding it to your morning prayers to help to create in you the humble heart of Jesus.
Litany of Humility
O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.
From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved…
From the desire of being extolled …
From the desire of being honored …
From the desire of being praised …
From the desire of being preferred to others…
From the desire of being consulted …
From the desire of being approved …
From the fear of being humiliated …
From the fear of being despised…
From the fear of suffering rebukes …
From the fear of being calumniated …
From the fear of being forgotten …
From the fear of being ridiculed …
From the fear of being wronged …
From the fear of being suspected …
That others may be loved more than I,Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I …
That, in the opinion of the world,
others may increase and I may decrease …
That others may be chosen and I set aside …
That others may be praised and I unnoticed …
That others may be preferred to me in everything…
That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should…

Just be a good catholic, show them anything they hear from others is not true. Always take the high ground.

Two options, refute the gossip and well you can probably guess what will happen.

Second, smile and bear it, offer up your suffering for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for the salvation of sinners or in reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

I can’t tell you which one to do, but I know which one I’d do…

If you rarely speak with them, how do you know that “they are being turned against you?” In any case, if you can maintain friendly Christian relations with people, they will see that whatever negativity that they may hear from others is incorrect.
