When is joking about public figures sinful? I understand the gossiping rules, and I know that jokes that negatively alter somebody’s opinion of another person are a grave sin.

But I really don’t want to get scrupulous about this so I would like to pose two examples:
  1. I am a Canadian, and hockey is a big part of our culture. Now there is a referee in the NHL that has a rather large head. His helmet is probably one of the biggest in the league. The joke is that his helmet isn’t really a helmet; he sawed off the end of a garbage can and put it on his head. (This was actually mentioned by one of the commentators)
Are jokes like this wrong? Because they are not intended to be malicious, just to poke fun at other people.
  1. What about talking about different players on the team in a negative way. Such as “Player X is playing really lousy lately, we need to trade him for some young guys”
Or “Player Y is performs poorly in the shootout, they shouldn’t put him in anymore”

I think when comments become mean spirited like the garbage can comment, that is inappropriate.
However commenting on a person’s manner of play on the field, is appropriate…but not using the idea of age of a person as the reason for his poor performance. Competition is based on winning or losing and for a team to win they need qualified players.

That’s just my opinion
