Is gossiping or talking about someone or a friend to another friend a mortal sin? For example, if a girl I know is bragging to me or saying weird things, and I tell one of my friends about it …but not being mean just talking , would that be a mortal sin? Or even a venial sin?

I think gossip is one of those things that can be hard to define…and I preface it by saying that I struggle with it. Now, as you mentioned, a friend is bragging or saying weird things, you might talk to someone else about it to help you deal with your reaction, or you might be concerned that your friend’s behavior is odd and you want to see if she has been acting this way around other people. You are not talking about her to be mean or to be saying “did you hear what I heard about Kathy?” I sometimes talk to others about something someone did or said because I want advice or even that I find it troubling and need to talk it out with someone.

On the other had, if I am talking about someone to put them in a bad light, then that is certainly gossip. For example, “Did you hear about Jane, she is is dating John but flirting with Dave.” Or if I am just talking about someone to put myself in a good light or to just tell a story about someone with no purpose.

Some gossip can be mortally sinful, if your gossip causes real hurt for someone, we would call that detraction. Yet some of what might be called gossip is simply telling a fact, “Did you hear Paul and Dotty are splitting up?” That could be gossip if they didn’t want anyone to know, or, if it is open knowledge, you are simply informing someone of a fact.

I have discussed this at length with my confessor and it agrees that there are degrees of gossip. The key is to ask yourself if you are hurting anyone by talking about someone, and that someone can be yourself. Yet sometimes, not talking about someone or a situation can itself be hurtful…I learned that by experience.

I think it is a venial sin but that it can be a mortal sin if you do it maliciously or if you lie intentionally while gossiping. I have no doubt that gossiping is a sin and it is one that I struggle with but I think it all depends on how you gossip. It all depends on what you say and what you mean. I have been struggling with this particular sin for a while now.

Gossip does nothing to advance humanity. It drives people apart instead of bridging people together. So why do it?

From the Modern Catholic Dictionary:

GOSSIP. Idle talk, especially about others. The morality of gossip is determined by the degree to which time is wasted in useless conversation, by the failure in justice or charity committed against others, and by the damage done to people’s reputation by those who gossip.

Gossiping is dangerous. It can come back to bite you badly. If you are talking about someone and you are not dealing strictly with facts, and facts that you are comfortable speaking about…then it is better left unsaid… Put yourself in the other persons shoes… Would you like to be the “subject, target or victim” of gossip?

I have never seen an occasion when “gossip” has been beneficial…

People are addicted to it for the cheap entertainment that it provides. It’s too bad that it’s often false or exaggerated.

Matthew 12:36
But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken I have an inlaw who claims to be a good Catholic woman but gossips constantly, .

This is one of my worst vices. I can be a bad gossip and egg people on at times. Maybe I’m scared on some level that people won’t find me interesting if I don’t have something new, fresh, or exciting to say. At least I have much more of an awareness of how I feed into this sin now, though. Still working on it.

Gossiping and talking about others is my worst weakness also. I talk about my friends to my other friends a lot… not trying to hurt them, but i just like gossiping. it’s really bad, and I pray to God everyday to help me not do it. I’ve actually gotten better, but i do struggle with it also.

I always wondered this. I talk to my friends daily, chatting back and forth, usually it’s what we heard or saw from other friends. I didn’t realize it was considered a sin. No wonder I would feel bad at the end of the day, and everyday I would say today I will not chat. I pray that I overcome this.
