Our Lady’s final appearance at Fatima during the Miracle of the Sun on October 13, 1917, was as Our Lady of Mount Carmel holding the Infant King of Kings. So, “Got Brown Scapular?” Got your gang colors on? 😃

I have worn one for years. Only remove it for showers. I replace it every year. 👍

Yes. I had one blessed by a novus ordo priest years ago, but was never enrolled. I stopped wearing it for a while, but I picked up a cheap little free one from my chapel a few months ago. Have worn it ever since.

I don’t understand. Divine Providence provides us with so many opportunities to get closer to God (especially through the assistance of Our Blessed Mother) and we treat these as if they mean very little. Perhaps taking a reverent attitude might be more persuasive.

When I was a kid my mother gave one to me. While at school (Catholic) I would hide it in my pocket, because no one else wore one, and with the insecurities of youth I just wanted to fit in. I remember some nights tossing and turning, not being able to sleep. Then I would recall that I had left my scalpular in my pocket and dig it out. Invariably I would then fall asleep within five minutes after putting it back on. It’s funny I had not even thought of that brown scalpular for almost thirty years, when about a week ago it popped into my mind, and been thinking about it ever since.

AND THEN THIS THREAD POPS UP. Is someone upstairs trying to tell me something? :hmmm:

When I was ten or eleven years old and just beginning to attend Mass on my own (I had been baptized in the Catholic Church as an infant to please my devout paternal grandmother, but my parents were and are not churchgoers), I bought a brown scapular and wore it occasionally. My wearing of the brown scapular varied through the years and gradually ceased. By the time I entered the Orthodox Church at age 23, of course I was not going to attach myself to a “Latin” devotion. But while visiting Brazil in 2002, I went sightseeing at a colonial-era Baroque church in Ouro Preto that was dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Nossa Senhora do Carmo), There I bought a little brown scapular as a souvenir (in addition to postcards and suchlike). And since there were no Orthodox parishes in Ouro Preto, I attended Mass that Sunday at Nossa Senhora do Carmo (though I did not receive Communion).

Anyway, within a year and a half I had reverted to Catholicism: within three years I had joined a Lay Carmelite community. I remain a Lay Carmelite today. Of course I wear the brown scapular day and night! As another member of my Lay Carmelite community has said of the brown scapular, “Don’t leave this world without it!” 😉

I’ve had my brown scapular since I was very small, but I honestly cannot remember if I was officially enrolled, so I’ve kind of shied away from it. 😊

I have a question for those of you who wear the scapular

I am a member of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites so wearing the brown scapular is a part of our “habits” on a daily basis.

I wear it under my shirt but sometimes the strings will pop out or the back portion will sneak up and look like my shirt tag is out. My students are always asking me about it. Most of them are not even practicing Christians so I have no clue how to explain the scapular to them in a simple easy to understand way that won’t sound superstitious.

How do you guys explain your scapulars when people ask who are non Catholics

I have worn the brown scapular for about 5 years now. The one I have was taken to Rome by a friend and blessed by Pope Benedict XVI along with other items. Not a formal enrollment. We had asked our parish priest if he would be willing, and for some reason he was busy and it never happened.

I have a Miraculous Medal sewn into the frontpiece- it lends it some weight and gives me a way to always wear both. I’ve also resolved to maintain it with sewing as long as it will last, it having been blessed by our beloved Pope Emeritus. That said, I do take it off to sleep, and for showers and swimming.

I handed several out at an RCIA class where I was sponsoring a friend. I’ve never been asked, but my explanation to someone who asked would probably be that it is a devotional to the Blessed Virgin. Let them figure it out. 🙂

What’s a Novus Ordo Priest? Is it like a Catholic Priest??
