My new standard sized Douay Rheims by Baronius Press was delivered yesterday. Just magnificent! :extrahappy:

I got the black, hardcover one. The quality is unbelievable; the text, the binding. And I love how simple the cover is: THE HOLY BIBLE.

This Bible far surpasses the NAB’s and RSV’s at the local Catholic bookstores. Not to mention the language of the DR is much more beautiful.

I’m seriously considering getting the pocket version to carry around with me. Anyone have the pocket version?

Thanks for the comments. I do hope to get one soon (the pocket size actually) from Baronius, so I hope others will weigh in here. I have a Douay-Rheims already, but it is way too large to use anywhere other than home (it’s even bigger than the large size one Baronius sells).

pocket size is good quality but better have a good set of eyes and a BIG pocket

Haha! Yeah, I thought Baronius stretched the definition of “pocket” just from looking at the description on their site. Is the text smaller than the text in a Daily Missal?

yes very small but built to last, also thick and not pliable - good quality. I bought mine at online All Catholic Books at a good price

yes they are the best prices and good selection, especially with publisher sales

I just looked at a buddy’s DR pocket ed. (Baronius) an hour ago. It is small print, but it’s not too bad, considering you are trying to fit the WHOLE BIBLE in a “pocket” size book.

I am considering using the pocket version of just the Psalms and NT since I would be using a pocket bible for devotional purposes primarily. I do not find myself reading OT passages for prayer much, so I would probably not want to carry around the extra weight. The Psalms and NT are meant to be, literally, put in your pocket. The full bible ain’t fittin’ in nobody’s pocket.

Also, the page dimensions of the pocket bibles match those of their Little Office of the BVM, a book I have already ordered (should be shipping ASAP). Having the same dimensions makes them easier to tote around together and not be sliding around each other.

Their books look like they are heirloom quality. I have the paperback DR Bible from TAN Books, and it just doesn’t compare to the BP version. All in all, BP sells higher quality items, but you pay a small premium for all the work they put into it.

I have a baronius press pocket edition…very attractively presented…I have the burgundy option…not too weeny but it wont crush your chest if you fall asleep reading it in bed…

a truely pocket sized protestant version is with my mother (a Lutheran) who has her grand ma German script edition on almost tissue paper…very beautiful and black with the gothic script

The price was so good I was somewhat suspicious.
I don’t think you need to be suspicious of All Catholic Books–I got the Haydock DR from them some months ago because the price was so much better than anywhere else, and it is absolutely beautiful👍

I wasn’t so suspicious that I didn’t order from them. That is where I got my Douay Rheims.

And I know what you mean about the Haydock: $87 for a $125 dollar book!? They almost reeled me in on that one. :juggle:

I have both the full size and the pocket size (Baronius) and I love them both. The pocket size is rather beefy but it’s still very managable. If you wear cargo pants or have a jacket pocket it will easily fit in there.

On a side note, I’m really looking forward to Baronius’ breviary. They were also going to make a latin vulgate but I think that idea is still up in the air.

Yes, I agree about the breviary. Now, will that be the same as what is found on www.breviary.net? I hope its not too expensive.

That breviary site seems to be run by sedevacantists, so I don’t think they will be exactly the same, as they most likely reject any revisions that may have been made. It seems they use the breviary of St. Pius X on their site. I’m not sure though. If they reject the revisions in the 1962 missal they might reject the revisions in the 1962 breviary as well.

That, of course, is assuming that the breviary Baronius will publish is the 1962 one, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be.

I didn’t surf around that site enough to recognize if they were sede’s. Regardless, the Divine Office they provide is a beautiful version. Is the 1962 breviary available online anywhere?

Zooey,

Its such a shame that I haven’t seen this bible on the bookshelves at the local Catholic bookstores. Other than the cost being a factor, I can’t imagine anyone passing up on this Bible for a NAB or RSV. THERE IS NO COMPARISON.

I had just purchased a regular DR from them two or three months ago, but I just couldn’t resist Fr. Haydock’s version when I saw the price. I (briefly) contemplated asking for it as a Christmas present, but I wanted it NOW 😃 and I’m so glad I went ahead and ordered it.

If anyone is hesitating about this version, all I can say is “GET IT!!”…👍

I just ordered the pocket in black.
I’ve been eying it for a while now. 😃
