So tomorrow my wife and I go to meet our priest and do the first Marriage classes or consulting. We have been married for 10 years and have 4 kids and this is both our first marriages although we did it civil. I have not come into the church yet but have done RCIA and will most likely have to go through it again next year since our marriage was not blessed by the church… Anyways what can we expect in these meeting…? Thanks again , God Bless

Is your wife a Catholic?

I am not understanding why you would have to go through RCIA a second time.

Praise God! My wife and I came out of a simular situation last March, and repeated our vows in the chapel. What ever you do, don’t listen to, or repeat to the priest any of the legal advice that you get from here. The meeting with the priest was out of Christian love without either party mentioning Canon Law. What ever it takes to fix your marriage must be approved by the Parish Administrator and turned in to the Diocese, so to shorten the process have all your papers with you. Everything was done out of sight, so there is no use in condemning yourselves with Canon Laws before hand that will never be applied to you. The Priest will do what it takes, and during the first meeting we were told to make a reservation for the chapel.

It was beautiful, and both our mothers were present at the wedding and participated in the paper work before and after our rings were blessed.

I don’t know the answer to your question, but I wanted to say Congratulations!!! 🙂

I met with my parish priest last Friday to get the ball rolling on the convalidation of my marriage. My husband is non-Catholic and we were married in a civil service 8 years ago. I was nervous but there really isn’t much to it. When I told him that it was a first marriage for both of us he was relieved and removed a pile of paperwork from the table. The priest gave me some forms to fill out, and one to have two Catholic witnesses to attest to the fact we were never married in the Church. I have to get my Baptism certificate, a copy of my marriage license and a check for $60 to the diocese and bring it all back to him. He did say not to expect it to be done in a couple of weeks since its a small tribunal and they have a lot of cases.

Congratulations by the way! Isn’t it funny to be so excited to marry someone you’ve been married to for so long? Love it!😃

my wife is Catholic…👍
Ah, I see. Yes, then convalidation is needed before your profession of faith and confirmation. As this is the first marriage for both of you, it is very straightforward. Each diocese and priest have different guidelines on premarital preparation, so exactly what that will entail and the timing will be up to the priest. There will be a premarital investigation form to fill out and some paperwork to gather, but your meeting should be pretty simple.

However, I would suggest talking to your priest about reception into the Church while you are there because if you are baptized I see no reason that you need to repeat RCIA. You can enter the Church right after the convalidation. If you are unbaptized, then the typical time for baptisms is Easter Vigil, but even there the priest has lattitude.

Ask the priest if you can make your profession of faith and receive confirmation either immediately after the convalidation or in a Mass soon after.

Great help here. I will make sure to ask him. We have been very active in the community and we are blessed with 2 great priest. I am actaully really looking forward to this. Getting everything right by God and the Church. 😃

Meeting went well… I am still not coming into the Church till Easter. We got all the home work assignments to do. It should be a interesting process. My wife is now planning our ceremony, especially since we never did a real wedding so she is going all out…oh boy…😛
