I want to sing some music of the Gothic genre…not Goth music, but Gothic, Medieval music. If anyone can show me where I can find some that would be a blessing.

I am aware of Gothic literature, which is not related to the Middle Ages, and the Ostrogoth and Visigoth tribes, which were extant in the Early Middle Ages, and Gothic art, and Gothic architecture, but I am not aware of any of this having to do with a particular genre of music. Could you be more specific about what you want, possibly with an example or two?

Have you taken any music history courses as background? One place to start is our old friend Google: try searching “gothic era music” and you’ll find about 12 million hits. Or go dirctly to the medieval music wiki, which has an excellent overview of the music from 1100 to 1500, usually seen as the Gothic era. Not much of it, outside of church chant, was written down and little of that made it to today. The wiki article will give you a place to start. Another place to go is iTunes, but if you search music of the gothic or medieval era, you won’t find much, maybe a half dozen.
Also, search for the group Piffaro in iTunes and you’ll find a goldmine of late gothic and early renaissance music; try the Preview button so you can hear what it sounds like. After doing some study, you can search for printed transcriptions, but good luck there. I’ve searched for such printed music for years, and haven’t had much luck.
You’ll find some interesting factoids, such as the prominence of bagpipes and trombones, along with the recorders, shawms and flutes, and various stringed and percussion instruments. Early English renaissance musical troups, called Waits or Waytes, travelled about playing the popular tunes by memory or from “fake books” much like jazz and folk musicians still do today. Improv music hasn’t changed much in a thousand years! Gook luck and happy searching!

You might try writing to the choir or church that recorded the music and see what might be available as printed music. The music departments of any university might help by providing publishers’ addresses. You can also contact the group Piffaro through their website:
