I’m weighing doing this, making this kind of commitment.

Do you have any experience with this? Any long-term experience? Suggestions or advice?

I wear the Brown Scapular. Rather than rely on any of my “experiences” I think it would be more credible to note that it is highly recommended by many saints and popes. 👍

I wear it almost constantly when I’m awake. If I ever were to do mission work I think I would have a permanent one on constantly. What harm can it do, and what good it will do!👍

I’ve worn one for over 25 years. It is a committment because you should be enrolled in the scapular by a priest (it’s not necessary to receive the promise). But it’s a statement of a consecration to Our Lady and it’s an external sign. Wearing it is an offering and a small penance that we do. The graces attached to the Scapular are tremendous. Like any sacramental, it is meant to bring us closer to God, not as a good luck charm. I have felt the protection of God through the Scapular. It’s a great way to show our devotion. I’ve found that people who wear the Scapular for a while become much more solid in their Catholic faith. It really does help – it brings confidence and strength.

I wear a green and red scapular. I use it as a reminder to who should be #1 in my life, and to honor the Blessed Virgin. I wear them under my clothes, but stopped wearing them at night due to tangles and whatnot. I don’t think of them as magical or anything like that - just that I should always be seeking Christ.

I was invested/enrolled in the scapular when I was a kid and have worn one since (I wear a silver medal blessed by JPII :)) I can only say its wonderful to have this special relationship with the Virgin. When giving childbirth I was asked to remove all jewelry. I tied my medal to my headband 🙂 The commitment is soooo worth it 🙂

As an RCIA Candidate, I currently wear the Green Scaplar and the Brown Scapular. The Green Scapular has been properly blessed, and I recite the required prayer every day.

I also wear the Brown Scapular even though I have been told I cannot be properly blessed and invested until after Confirmation. I wear it anyhow as a mark of respect to Mother Mary, with no hope for all the privilages and indulgences granted to invested wearers. My little dedication to Her:o

I have one - kind of old though (10 years ago when I was first looking into the Catholic faith), although I don’t wear it much since it gave me rashes.

What is the proper way to wear it, though? The string’s kind of long and keeps riding up to my neck with the back falling down my back.

I wear the Five-Fold scapular and have for years now. At first it seemed quite odd to me, but I was determined to do my best to obtain the graces and to be the best daughter of Mary I could be. Wearing the scapular is like being constantly in prayer as long as you observe chastity according to your station in life and are in a state of grace. I wear my scapular constantly - only exception is in the shower & swimming. You get used to adjusting it periodically. Any rash you may have gotten should dissipate after the wool softens. Actual allergies to wool are very rare. The promises attached to the scapular are real and far too few Catholics avail themselves of it. I cannot imagine my life without wearing it and I pray I die wearing it.

Good for you for wearing it anyway 👍 I would seek a second opinion on this, though. I’m almost certain my husband was invested before his conversion (well, he was Catholic at heart, like you, but was still waiting to receive the sacraments).

Possibly you could knot the string (one on each end) to make it shorter and less slippable. Make it just big enough to fit your head through.

Or consider wearing a Scapular Medal instead (though these need to be blessed as well)

I have been thinking about wearing one. Someone on here just gave me a web-site that had some on it.

What does being invested/enrolled in the scapular entail? I hear people say this and I don’t quite understand what takes place. Could someone explain it to me?

Your priest has a special prayer and blessing on your scapular. It is not a usual blessing on other items where priest just says a short blessing. For the scapular, it takes about 2 min or so, and the prayer comes from a book.

The blessing “sticks” with the person not the scapular. So you can use a new one if needed. Tim

Depends on the scapular. The booklet that came with my brown scapular listed things required. This includes chastity according to one’s state in life. You can work out with the Priest what other requirement you should do as service to Mary. I think a daily recitation of 5 decades of the Rosary is OK.

For the green scapular of conversion, I must say this prayer at least once per day: “Immaculate heart of Mary, pray for us now, and at the hour of our death”.

Is there a site where I can read up on the various scapulars that exist? Ever since my reversion I’ve been interested in this devotional/sacramental, and I think it would be best to acquire a devotional as soon as I can (prayerfully, of course).

I secure mine with my bra straps so it stays in place (sorry to mention my unmentionables, guys).🙂
