When does it become a Mortal Sin to pay taxes? It may seem like a silly question but really at the rate we are going where is the line?
 
Paying tax is not a sin, regardless of how the money is used. Taxes are taken by force, not voluntary contributions.

It’s not a tax. It’s a law that we must buy insurance, insurance of a specific kind.

The gvt is not providing the insurance, Prudential, United Health Care, etc are providing it.

Actually, there is a tax involved…if you do not have what the government deems to be a “qualified health plan.” From Section 1501 of PL 111-148:REQUIREMENT TO MAINTAIN MINIMUM ESSENTIAL COVERAGE.—An applicable individual shall for each month beginning after 2013 ensure that the individual, and any dependent of the individual who is an applicable individual, is covered under minimum essential coverage for such month.

  • ‘‘(c) AMOUNT OF PENALTY.—
    ‘‘(1) IN GENERAL.—The penalty determined under this subsection for any month with respect to any individual is an amount equal to 1⁄12 of the applicable dollar amount for the calendar year.

  • ‘‘(3) APPLICABLE DOLLAR AMOUNT.—For purposes of paragraph (1)—
    ‘‘(A) IN GENERAL.—Except as provided in subparagraphs (B) and (C), the applicable dollar amount is $750.
    ‘‘(B) PHASE IN.—The applicable dollar amount is $95 for 2014 and $350 for 2015.
Translation: the tax (and, per the Supreme Court, it is a tax) is $750 per adult and $375 per child who is not covered up to a limit of $2,250. If your household income is less than $112,500 per year, the amount would be capped at 2% of your adjusted gross income (for example, if your family made $100,000 per year, the cap would be $2,000…if your family made $50,000 per year, the cap would be $1,000…if your family made $25,000 per year, the cap would be $500, and so on)

(For 2014 and 2015 there is a phase-in where the amount is less).

The fuss comes in that Obamacare is fundamentally wrong-headed. Not only does it mandate that employers who have religious objections be involved in the purchase of abortifacient contraceptives and abortion, it is a fundamental violation of Catholic Social Teaching:

In general,
…excesses and abuses, especially in recent years, have provoked very harsh criticisms of the Welfare State, dubbed the “Social Assistance State”. Malfunctions and defects in the Social Assistance State are the result of an inadequate understanding of the tasks proper to the State. Here again the principle of subsidiarity must be respected: a community of a higher order should not interfere in the internal life of a community of a lower order, depriving the latter of its functions, but rather should support it in case of need and help to coordinate its activity with the activities of the rest of society, always with a view to the common good.

By intervening directly and depriving society of its responsibility, the Social Assistance State leads to a loss of human energies and an inordinate increase of public agencies, which are dominated more by bureaucratic ways of thinking than by concern for serving their clients, and which are accompanied by an enormous increase in spending. In fact, it would appear that needs are best understood and satisfied by people who are closest to them and who act as neighbours to those in need.

As pertains to this specific program, Bishop Nickless, Archbishop Naumann / Bishop Finn, Bishop Aquila, and others have come out with statements supporting that position, as well.

The government program is fundamentally flawed and needs to be disposed of immediately!

That “tax” (or more correctly “fine” although the gvmt denys the obvious name) does not provide you with insurance. If you pay the fine, you have no benefits except you aren’t directly funding abortions. The government requirement for insurance is not the fine, that fine is what the uninsured get to pay instead of insurance payments. It’s a “tax” because the IRS is going to try to collect it.

Well, interestingly, the government called it a “fine”…but SCOTUS “deemed” it to be a “tax” – that was why they determined the “individual mandate” was constitutional.

Interestingly, though, the subsidies that people get, if they have the correct income, is a “refundable tax credit” – so, in fact, unless your income is over 400% of the poverty level, you would be getting tax dollars to pay for insurance that covers abortifacients and abortions.
