I became a Christian at the age of 17 and was finally received into the Catholic Church age 26 this past Easter. Recently, I’ve been studying Religious Education and the ways that faith and an understanding of faith is passed on to young people. It’s really made me think.
Before my conversion, I was interested in exploring the occult, Buddhism, Freemasonry, and lots of other odd things. I guess you could say I had a natural interest in religion and the ultimate questions in life. I’ve always been quite serious I suppose, even as a kid I would get dragged along to Sunday school and ask the pastor awkward questions when he was giving his childrens’ homily.
Anyway, it’s just made me think - what if, instead of being a person who cares about where we go when we die, what if I’d been the sort of person who cares more about football scores and how his favourite team’s doing. I know plenty of guys like that. How would God get through to someone like that?
I guess it’s something humbling, I realise how easy perhaps my faith is to me, and how hard it must be for some people to grow in faith. Even still, I still make a mess of my faith most of the time.
Does anyone else feel this way? Are you faithful because you’re a ‘religious’ type of person, or are you faithful despite not being a particular ‘type’?
