After committing a mortal sin, what is a person’s relationship with God at that point (after sin and before confession)? I know they would be cut off from salvation then, but would all graces also cease? Would Jesus still help them and protect them, and can we communicate with Him through prayer in a state of mortal sin, or are we just “dead” to God until we recieve absolution?

This is a question that has troubled me a lot lately, hoping someone can clarify. Sometimes I’m not certain if God hears me after I have sinned, but today in church I felt as though He had something to tell me…

You are not “dead” until absolution. God can definitely still hear you. How would we be able to make an act of contrition if He could not hear it? As long as it is your intention to go to Confession ASAP and to amend your life, I would doubt you to be “cut off from salvation.” Its definitely not a game of gotcha, but your heart needs to be in the right place to repent and to accept His forgiveness.

God wants us more than we could ever humanly realize. It is our faults that move us away from Him. We choose this when we sin. Mortal sin left unrepented will result in the loss of heaven only because we choose to remain separated from God.

I, too, had this question. I thought that the love of God was conditional. I’m good today and God loves me. I commit a mortal sin and God is so mad at me that He listens to the “saintly ones” and forgets about me. That is indeed NOT the case. God IS infinite love. As long as we move ourselves in His direction He calls us more than we may ever realize. The actual grace (grace that moves us back to Him) never leaves us. If you are truly sorry and intend to go to confession as soon as you can, God knows this. Your withholding the Eucharist in this state is even more profound respect for God and He knows this too.

When you know that you committed a mortal sin, (with full knowledge and full consent) then go on with your relationship and look forward to reconciliation. Do not stop your prayers. I would think that the contrite prayers of a sinner in this state are heard quite loudly and the saints and angels rejoice.

I needed to hear my answer to this as much, if not more than you do. Thank you for making me realize this superabundant Love whom we call God…teachccd 🙂
