I would like to start this thread for those who have recieved graces through St. PHilomena’s intercession. Please note, this IS NOT a debate thread on if she’s a saint or not. We have other threads (on St. Philomena) for that purpose. I will say that St. Philomena is still a saint despite her feast day removal.

I would like to star by saying that I have recieved a number of graces through the intercession of St. Philomena. Once, I prayed through St. Philomena’s intercession to get into a certain university and I was accepted. Thanks be to God and St. Philomena.

I like to believe that St. Philomena has helped obtain me the grace to improve my prayer life.

MANY other people have much more astounding stories of the efficacy of St. Philomena’s powerful intercession. I hope they post them here.

Merry Christmas !!

Hi–i understand that many folk ask for prayers and help from the saints that are called saints by the church. Often we ourselves are ask to pray for someone. i do believe that the recognized saints and angels pray for us as well as those who are unknown as saints. Although my Mom is not a recognized saint and no longer in the world, i have no doubt she joins with those who love God and prays for all of us sinners.–nicolo

The very first time I ever prayed to St. Philomena, it was a novena. I asked for her intercession in helping me with an audition I had for a professional singing job (I used to be a professional singer, but have switched to a day job to take care of my family when I got pregnant with my first child.) I was very nervous about not getting the job, as I hadn’t sung in years. I got the job! Through her intercession!

I once heard Mother Angelica say some saints hold a grudge if you don’t stay loyal to them (meaning go to them often for assistance/intercession). For years, I held off praying to her for that reason…I was afraid if I didn’t go to her often, I’d offend her. In any case, she is an incredibly powerful intercessor, and is very special to me. My husband’s grandmother’s name was Philomene (the French version of the name), and that is our DD2’s middle name.

Well, St. Philomena can get tough on you if you make her a promise and don’t fullfill it. In the Fr. O’Sullivan’s book on St. Philomena, he had a section on people who got terrible results from not keeping their promises.

Also, a small diversion from the original topic. Personally, I sometimes worry if St. Philomena gets jealous when I go and venerate St. Anne, the Mother of Mary or St. Anne gets jealous if I honor St. Philomena. However, I just relied on the conclusion that jealousy is not really something a humble saint would want to be since their main purpose is pray for others and lead others to God, the source of all grace and blessing.
Besides, Our Lady (in old approved private revelations) greatly endorsed devotion to her mother, St. Anne and so as to endorse devotion to St. Philomena said “To St. Philomena nothing is refused”. So, I guess there is no competition between these two saints since the Queen of all Saints would encourage devotion to these two through he approved private revelations.

Yeah, i don’t think Saints bear grudges after all , they are saints:)

what kind of terrible results did those people get? I pray to St Philomena often, but don’t make promises to her.

Devotions were held this past Sunday at St. Josaphat in honor of St. Philomena. I am hope many who attended this devotion and have recieved favors will feel free to place ther testimonials in this thread.

On a side note, the oil of St. Philomena was blessed at her Shrine in Mungano del Cardinale, Italy this past Sunday. Her birthday was celebrated on January 10.

Mother Angelica said that saints would hold grudges?? She must have been joking.

I am currently praying a novena to St. Philomena as we are in the process of looking for a school for our daughter. So we’ll see.

I sometimes wonder if I should pick a less-popular saint as a patron so the poor dears don’t feel left out?

my hubby certainly picked a very least popular saint. cornelius the centurion. one cannot even find a medal or even a relic medal of him.

What? The one at whose house Peter had that important vision? For shame!

I found a good one - St Gaetano of Thiena. A good-a Italian boy, and his feast is on my birthday 😉

St. Philomena favors
As many of you may know, at St. Josaphat Catholic Church in Detroit MI where the Tridentine Mass is offered with the proper indult, we have had special devotions in honor of this virgin martyr. These devotions began in August of 2005 and are held three times every year (The next and last devotion of this year will be **August 12, 2007 **so mark your calendars if you live in the area).

I have decided to begin collecting testimonials of favors received through St. Philomena’s intercession as a result of coming to St. Josaphat for the devotions or as a result of taking a prayer card from St. Josaphat a praying privately for the saint’s intercession. Other testimonials are welcome as well.
If you have attended one of the devotions at St. Josaphat or know someone who has and has received a favor, please send me a private message or if you want, you can post it here publicly on this thread.

Note: I feel that is was more appropriate to put this on a separate thread rather than place it on the Detroit’s Tridentine Mass thread because I don’t want the Detroit Tridentine Mass thread to get overloaded or way off topic.

I’m just going to relate my St. Philomena experience. A little over a year ago (around May-August 2006) I prayed several continuous novenas to St. Philomena. I had a specific intention in mind, or rather a set of very much inter-related intentions. I wasn’t praying for a luxury good. I prayed for that which I absolutely knew what was good for me (spiritual guidance) but also for other health issues, too. I prayed and prayed, inside the church, within the chapel, before the Holy Eucharist, along the outdoor stations. I prayed the novena, trusting St. Philomena, a good saint who is applauded in the books as granting anything you ask, even if it seems superfluous, would answer me. Indeed, in one book I read, the author relates how he asked for a sports car, and how through St. Philomena’s intercession he supposedly shortly thereafter received the car.

I prayed and prayed, hoping throuh the intercession of St. Philomena God would heal, and if not heal, at least give me hope for the situation. I ended up going to a shrine, and while I was at the shrine store, I found a statue of St. Philomena. I bought it, and I prayed the novena before it for several weeks more. Then, one morning, as I was moving my arm for the alarm clock, I accidentally tipped the statue over. It fell on soft material, but the head still somehow broke off. Well, somewhat weirded out by this, I later bought a painting of St. Philomena. I still have it, but I’m not sure if I like it.

In any case, St. Philomena never granted my petitions.

I know I have nothing to expect from St. Philomena. I’m just finished praying to her for intercession. As I was praying, there was almost something “not right” about all of it. I’m not going to get into that, as it includes a personal event. I’m sticking with praying to Christ. Please note, I’m not trying to defame St. Philomena. I admire her very much as she is depicted in the stories of her martyrdom.

As we often say, God works in His time, and His way, so there are times when our prayers are not seemingly heard. It can be frustrating, but that is when we are really tested on how much faith we have.

Anyway, I have my own devotion to the saint, as well as to some other saints. I don’t believe they get jealous, or else get mad if we don’t fulfill our promises, or else have a devotion to another saint; they are, after all, above such things as they are perfectly united with Christ. Having said that, I would not cease praying to them, and to our Lord most especially. I am in dire need right now for a job, and I do believe that God, through these heavenly prayer warriors, will hear my pleas.

Dear Madaglan
Here’s my story about how St.Philomena interceded for our youth group. When we organized more than 12 years ago, we chose a teen saint…St.Philomena to be our patroness. Each night before bed as we say our liturgy of the hours, my spouse and I would ask for her intercession of our youth group. We also bought a statue of her which sits prominently on our dresser. About five years ago, after one of our coed volleyball games at another parish, two of our teen drivers were returning kids home. 3 teens in each car. The teen drivers were 18 at the time. As they both went thru an intersection, a car blew the light and broadsided both cars, spinning them around…as the adult leaders we were following about 4 min. behind them because we had stayed to clean up afterward…and came across the mayhem. Our teens all were wearing their seatbelts and were transported to hospitals for treatment. None seriously, thanks be to God, but their cars were totaled.

Later that night, as we said our night prayers, we thanked St.Philomena for interceding in the protection of our teens…the music box that was unwound…next to our St.Philomena statue immediately began to play a short verse. Later that night as we were asleep…we were awoken to a short rap on our closed bedroom door… No one but St.Philomena was there…not in sight, just in sound. We are eternally grateful for her ever watchful eyes. Don’t despair…perhaps the answer to your novena was no or not at this time. God knows what is best for us.

**Devotions in honor of the Feast of **
St. Philomena
Sunday, August 12, 2007

Following the 9:30 AM Tridentine Mass

St. Josaphat Church will be having devotions in honor of the feast of St. Philomena Virgin and Martyr.
Following the closing Mass hymn, special prayers will be offered in honor of the saint. A blessing with the relic of the saint will be given by the celebrant and all will be invited to come forward to venerate the relic.

These devotions began in 2005 during the 200th anniversary of the translation of St. Philomena’s sacred relics from Rome to Mugnano del Cardinale.

These devotions are offered with the approval of our parochial administrator, Fr. Mark Borkowski and under the guidance and support of the
Universal Archconfraternity of St. Philomena.

All are invited to come and ask the intercession of this powerful wonderworker.
