Grail psalms

I took a look at the grail psalm 150 and to me it seems vastly different from the original of the psalms? Is it me or am I right? Why such a big difference?

Psalm 150

1 Alleluia!
Praise God in his holy place;
praise him in his mighty firmament.
2 Praise him for his powerful deeds;
praise him for his boundless grandeur.
3 O praise him with sound of trumpet;
praise him with lute and harp.
4 Praise him with timbrel and dance;
praise him with strings and pipes.
5 O praise him with resounding cymbals;
praise him with clashing of cymbals.
6 Let everything that breathes praise the LORD!

Looking at Psalm 150 it reads very different to the grail Psalm 150

Revised Grail:

praise him for his boundless grandeur.

Or - are you confused by the number changes in the psalms - though it doesn’t affect psalm 150?

Which Bible are you using?

In some Bibles psalm 50 is numbered as psalm 51, so you may be looking at two different psalms entirely.

Why the different numbering?

Because when the first Catholic Bibles were translated into English they used the Septuagint (Greek) version of the Old Testament. Later (and especially protestant) versions used the numbering from the Hebrew translations.

The numbering system came about after the books for the canon was chosen, and so the numbering (chapter, verses, psalm number) is not inspired and so is neither more right nor more wrong from the Catholic point of view.

The RSV-CE gives both numbers. I am working from an old [mid 19th century] family Douay bible.

They are the same through psalm 9.

The newer system splits psalm 10 at verse 18 and continues it as psalm 11.

This makes all numbers higher by one through 113 [New]

My old Douay has psalm 113 go through verse 6 and then restart for verses 1 through 8, which the new breaks into Psalm 114 and 115. The old psalm 114 is then combined with 115[which has only verses 10-18] to make the new 116.

Numbering continues high by one through 146 [145]

Then 146 and 147 are combined to make the new 147.

Leaving the last three the same.
