These kids were baptized by their grandmother. A) Hardly kidnapping and B) It was their GRANDMOTHER, Just because it is her 2nd generation children does not mean she should not have some sort of following on their faith.

Remember when as parents you confirmed/baptized your child and you made a promise to raise your kids in the faith? Same principle.
no it is not at all the same things
the parents, with whom the child lives, are the ones who promise to raise the child in the faith. The grandmother, who does not have custody of the child and cannot raise him in the faith, cannot therefore either make or keep that promise.

Your mother may have followed the correct form with the proper intent or not. We will never know whether or not the baptism is valid.
I would tell the children what transpired, now if they are of the age of reason or later when they attain the proper age. If they are minors, I would inform my brother.
👍👍

I too would tell my brother.

God bless

A friend of mine is a practising mid-wife. On several occasions, when she thinks the child might no live too long, she will baptise the child. This she does in the nearest sink, very discretely, and does it regardless of the family’s wishes

The nurse who baptized the baby had legitimate reason to think that he was going to die soon, she was afraid that he would go to Hell or Limbo. Italian law at the time prevented a Christian from being raised by heathens, it was an unfortunate situation that ultimately worked out in the end.
It had nothing to do with ‘Italian law’, there wasn’t actually an ‘Italy’ to have ‘Italian law’ at the time, just a collection of states of varying importance. The only place with this law was the ‘Papal States’ (ruled by the Pope and containing the city of Bologna where the Mortara family lived). The ruling originated with Benedict XIV who had proclaimed that illicitly baptized Jewish children were to be separated from their families.

The kidnapping caused a furore across the world at a time when the Papal States could have done with some friends. On September 10 1870 the armies of the new Italy entered Rome. Pius IX was left with the Vatican to rule (after an overwhelming vote by the inhabitants of the Papal States to join the new Italy). So, yes, it worked out in the end.

This is different, with danger of death. Still, she should inform the parents if the baby does, in fact, live. They have the right to know.

Yeah WOW if the child lived and she did that. I would want to know if someone baptized my child.

I don’t know much of anything about Canadian history so I don’t understand where you are coming from.
He’s coming from here:
“they tricked the Huron aboriginals into being baptized through various means.”

The two main churches in Canada- RC and United Church (Prot.)- have terrible modern-day track records up there.
A humorist once wrote of Charlemagne (as Holy Roman Emperor), “He would drive his enemies to the banks of a river and give them the choice of being baptized or drowned.”
Canadian churches came close to this exaggeration. A large part of their behavior lay in enrolling First Nations peoples in off-reservation schools where native language and culture were forbidden. And that was the least of it.
Both churches now in ‘payback’ modes, like Irish and US churches.

Back to the Hurons and others: The ceremonies were held as valid by the Church. When the Church began acting on that- looking for tithes etc.- the natives reacted as one might imagine, up to and including deadly force.
