He can, with the Bishop’s permission, use something called mustum, which is a very low alcohol content type of wine.

No but with the approval of his Bishop he may get permission to use a thing called mustum, which is basically “grape juice” but in actuality it is a little different. It is “fresh juice from grapes perserved by suspending its fermentation achieved by means of freezing or another method that does not alter it’s nature.” Commercial grape juice does not meet that requirement.

If a priest uses mustum it must be just for himself, he is not permitted to give it to the congregation.

For a lay person to use mustum, the request must go all the way to the Holy See.

Not to be insensitive to the those who battle alcoholism, but it seems hard for me to imagine a sip of communion wine triggering a person to go on an alcoholic binge. Have you ever heard of a lay person who forgoes the Blood for that reason?

I have heard from a person that suffers from alcoholism that even a taste of food that had alcohol cooked in it could cause “issues”.

Most lay recovering alcoholics just forgo the Precious Blood. But the priest must partake of both the Body and the Blood so they give them the mustum alternative. If a priest can take a small amount with no problem the priest can use intinction for themselves and then let someone else finish off the rest of the Precious Blood.

I assume the reason a lay person might request from the Holy See to take mustum would be if they had celiac’s disease or something that would prevent then from taking the host.

That’s because you obviously never battled it. But trust me when you drink vanilla extract to get the tiny tiny amount of alcohol that’s in it, a sip of anything including wine can be a trigger. That’s how bad the addictions can be.

For people who have alcohol issues, they do not need to receive The Precious Blood in order to fully receive Jesus.

Now that you give that example, I remember hearing how people in prison drink things with rubbing alcohol to get a taste.

Yes, it will and some have gone blind, but I was reaffirming my point of the desperation of those who suffer from severe alcoholism.
