Grassley's wife: No tweeting in church

Chuck Grassley is the ranking Republican on the US Senate’s Finance Committee. When the Republicans hold the Senate majority, he will be its chairman. He is also on the Senate Budget committee, and the Joint Committee on Taxation, so he has quite a bit of influence on US government spending. I mention all this because he is an important national politician.

And he looooves to tweet.

The Iowa Republican has developed a reputation among nearly 20,000 Twitter followers for his often cryptic shorthand tweets about policy, politics and University of Northern Iowa sports. He lit up the political blogosphere last summer with a pair of tweets taking Obama to task for criticizing of Congress while vacationing in Paris.

While the content of the senator’s message may have riled some people, it’s the timing of his tweets that torments his wife.

Barbara Grassley put her foot down on tweeting in church.

“I had had to tell him to knock it off,” she said, motioning as if slapping the senator’s hand. “Put it away.”

No, not at all for Catholics. We should remember where we are and what Mass is. Mass is not a task that just happens and for which we just need to be present. Before Mass we should be preparing and praying. After we should focus on “what just happened” (something I learned from my days in computer sales). Going back to tweeting seems so wrong - unless it is to tell somebody about the great homily or some insight gained.

On the other hand, I don’t think it is sinful - just sad.

This reminds me I recently assured everyone at my church that when they saw me fiddling around with my iTouch during the pastor’s sermon, I was merely using the ESV app (which, by the by, is really really awesome).

I’ve always assumed it was considered disrespectful to use a mobile in church. I avoid texting
and always put my phone on silent when going into a church or cathedral (even as a tourist), and I remember our tour guide (showing us round as part of a summer school) in Frankfurt - who had removed his hat as a sign of respect - got angry with a girl who answered her mobile whilst we were in a church.
