What are some examples of grave matter?? Is it only when it causes harm to another? I read somewhere that not giving to the poor is a mortal sin or grave matter. But, how often are we to give to the poor?

all mortal sins are grave matters.Hence the word mortal(deadly) All mortal sins cause harm to others in one way or another albeit some are more easily apppearant.Firstly obviously it hard for the poor to give tothe poor.But I suppose the poor could give their love to another or perhaps spend time witth the poor if they need it.We should give to the poor as often as we are able.If your talking about financial support the same would apply but therre are obviously many ways that one can give.Everytime you drop money in the collectioon plate some it will eventually end up in the needs of the poor.

All sins do cause harm, and always to ourselves. Some examples:

1. 
   *] Deliberate failure to go to mass on Sunday/Holy Day without good reason.
   *] Receiving communion without going to confession after a mortal sin (for the average person in average circumstances)
   *] Going to a seance to speak with the dead.
   *] Total neglect/refusal of any kind of prayer.
   *] Mutilation, such as sterilization.

There is no definitive list, because what may be grave matter for one may not be for another. (For example, an alcoholic taking a drink while alcohol is destroying his family is probably grave, my having a glass of wine with dinner, is probably not)
However, the 10 commandments is a good place to start. They were killing offenses in the old covenant and are equally serious in the new. There are other places in the bible where there are lists given that preclude going to heaven (assuming you don’t repent).
