Great Adventure Bible Study 24 part DVD set

My Wife got me this for Christmas. Just wondering if anyone else here already have done the 24 part study by Jeff Cavins and how you find it? What should I prepare myself for and how can I get the best out of this study?

Our parish Bible study group did it. If possible, get your wife or someone else to do it with you. The “group” aspect is quite good. I found it excellent.

Small group (lunch time Bible study) so we had a regular TV in a conference room. We all watched and then worked throgh the discussion questions together.

We did it 2 years ago at my parish, a small group, 6 of us. Be prepared to read a lot, think a lot, and ponder questions on the material you’ve read. Maybe I’m a little slow, but homework would take me at least 3 hours a week.

The course really puts the Salvation story in a historical time perspective. I feel, if you understand what was happening to the people in that period of time, you develop a better understanding of what the Bible is telling us.

My group had a small celebration when we hit the New Testament, we felt like we had accomplished one of life’s great milestone. My greatest delight was when Father read the Gospel to us at Mass—I knew exactly where the chapter, verse was in the Bible, and could place it in a historical context. Another favorite thing is the discussion with your study partners about the material—what you miss, they pick up, vice versa, or add another dimension to your thinking.

We did the reading, and answering questions on our own. We’d meet discuss the questions, then watch the DVD on the lesson.

My group really bonded while studying. We remain friends to this day.

Thanks guys. It sounds like something I could pitch to my local parish and maybe start a group or something. Did you all by the workbooks that go with it? I was thinkin of maybe buying one and then just photo-copying the pages for everyone else as we go along.

I find it to be quite pricey etc.

I don’t think that would be a legal option.

We did it a couple of years ago in our parish. We do not do the discussion groups, but meet every Wednesday evening to watch the DVD and do some Q&A with our pastor, who facilitates. We have a group of about 30.

Very good study! We started in January and finished in September. It was a lot of work…the reading was extensive, but I would do it again, if it was offered again.

The study materials are necessary in my opinion. It is in completing them and reflecting and pondering that God speaks, sometimes. You might find that Ascension Press would give you a break on the price if you order a certain quantity.

For the last class, everyone brings something, and we enjoy drinks, snacks, sandwiches, etc.

In my old parish we had over 100 people (at the peak) participating in a number of small groups ranging in size from half a dozen to over 30. They watched the video together then discussed the study questions, which they had thought about and completed during the previous week. Several of the groups continued on with various New Testament studies over the past two years. The feedback from the groups was very positive.

We launched this bible study program with a one-day Great Adventure Bible Timeline Seminar which involved over 430 participants from all over our diocese, about half of whom were from my parish. Most of those who were involved in the study groups attended this event and found that, while they loved the one-day program, they went much deeper in the study and sharing groups.
