Looking for a good book about the life and writings of St. Francis. Something that would be historically accurate. Its hard to say what the sources were for the authors out there. Even a documentary would be fine.
Thank you

There are probably a hundred biographies and nobody knows what the best one is.
But maybe try the Life of St. Francis by St. Bonaventure.
The Little Flowers of St. Francis is also essential - although maybe not meeting all historical standards of today, it’s an important book on the great saint.

I have both of those books and they are very good.

The Little Flowers of St. Francis by Raphael Brown is preferred by me. It may be out of print by that author, but there are a lot of kernels of wisdom in the little stories. A later edition by another author did not present it as well as Raphael Brown.

What an extraordinary saint Francis is! I visited Assisi and one can feel the peace there.

The life of Saint Francis by Saint Bonaventure is one of the greatest saints’ biographies ever written. Saint Bonaventure came right after Saint Francis, and in fact Saint francis healed him when he was a boy. There were many stories about Saint Francis right after he died, and it wasn’t certain what was really true. So Saint Bonaventure investigated this carefully, and in fact actually went and talked with people who had known Saint Francis. So this biography by an eminent saint himself is reliable. I have read this half a dozen times over the years myself.

This is not to knock other lives of saint Francis.

If you are interested, I see amazon.com has several editions of this life by Saint Bonaventure. I myself use the large collection containing this life of saint Francis, the omnibus of sources of saint Francis.

The best one is, “The Road to Assisi” by Paul Sabatier. It comes with a Study Guide. It is used in the Third Order Formation.
