Dear Brothers and Sisters,
This Feast, which had already been granted to the nation of Poland and been celebrated within Vatican City, was granted to the Universal Church by Pope John Paul II on the occasion of the canonization of Sr. Faustina on 30 April 2000. In a decree dated 23 May 2000, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments stated that “throughout the world the Second Sunday of Easter will receive the name Divine Mercy Sunday, a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials that mankind will experience in the years to come.” These papal acts represent the highest endorsement that the Church can give to a private revelation, an act of papal infallibility proclaiming the certain sanctity of the mystic, and the granting of a universal feast, as requested by Our Lord to St. Faustina.
Concerning the Feast of Mercy Jesus said:
Whoever approaches the Fountain of Life on this day will be granted complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. (Diary 300)
This Feast emerged from the very depths of My mercy, and it is confirmed in the vast depths of my tender mercies. (Diary 420)
On one occasion, I heard these words: My daughter, tell the whole world about My Inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.* [our emphasis] On that day all the divine floodgates through which grace flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity. Everything that exists has come forth from the very depths of My most tender mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate My love and mercy throughout eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. (Diary 699)
I want to grant complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My mercy. (Diary 1109)
For More on Divine Mercy Sunday, see HERE. Hopefully many will avail themselves of the graces offered on this Feast Day.

I kind of wish Divine Mercy Sunday did not coincide with the Second Sunday of Easter. I know it is a private devotion, and the Second Sunday of Easter is a great celebration, but other private devotions, like Our Lady of Lourdes, get their own optional feast days, so we can at least hear them mentioned at Mass. We celebrated the Second Sunday of Easter today, which is beautiful to be sure, but not a word about the Divine Mercy :(. It seems to me if a devotion is worth promoting, as I believe the Divine Mercy is, it should’ve gotten a feast day of its own. But then I’m clearly not a liturgist and probably missing some greater point.

Divine Mercy Sunday is a major event in my parish, with the Divine Mercy Novena started on Good Friday and running through yesterday. Extra confession times are scheduled and extra devotional prayers and times are set for today.

As for the why–Saint Pope John Paul II instituted the feast day to tie “the whole message” of Easter together…see the following:

thedivinemercy.org/mercysunday/dms.php

It makes sense since we journey through the Lord’s Passion, His Death, His Resurrection, and then we have the opportunity to avail ourselves of His Mercy one week after we reach the pinnacle of His Rising from the Dear. 🙂

We must remember that Pope Francis has declared this a Jubilee Year of Mercy, and that the Lord told Saint Faustina she must prepare the world for His Second Coming, and that after the Day of Mercy comes the Day of Justice. Put in proper context, the Feast of Divine Mercy is a huge day for the world.

Thanks for that link 👍, and I’m happy to hear that your parish emphasizes the Divine Mercy today. Mine does not. I know the message is contained in the readings and responsorial psalm, but it would still be nice to hear something more explicit. The homily we heard was beautiful and appropriate for the readings in its own way, but it focused on something other than mercy. Call me unsophisticated, but if I knew it was your birthday, I would say to you, “Happy Birthday!” I wouldn’t say that my birthday greeting was implied in everything else I said to you, or that I was exercising my option to focus on some other aspect of the day. Okay, my Divine Mercy rant is finished. 🙂

I happened to ask some friends who are Catholic if they have Divine Mercy devotions in their church.

They never even heard of Divine Mercy/

Dear Arizona,

So sorry to read that message, but hopefully you can share what you have learned today with them and with others!

Dear Christofirst,

It is sad that more priests and deacons do not preach more about the Divine Mercy – especially on this Feast Day — recognized by the Universal Church – and especially in this Jubilee year of Mercy.

It is good, of course, and important to preach on the Readings of the day but the readings were so very appropriate to the Feast today. Let us remember the Lord’s words in the Gospel: “As the Father has sent Me, so I send you”. Let us receive His Mercy and go to others bringing His Mercy to them! 🙂

It was celebrated with great vigor in our parish. However, we attended American Czestochowa Shrine to hear Cardinal Burke give a beautiful sermon. What a good and holy man.

Among the Poles, it is a cherished prayer by a cherished Saint.

I’m watching EWTN’s coverage of Divine Mercy Sunday from the National Shrine of Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, MA.

I live in MA and I can tell you, it is freezing with high winds and snow squalls. The people who went there, have my sympathy.

They have mandated receiving on the tongue only, because people are wearing gloves its so cold.

Dear 1990Domer,

Thanks for your reply. How blessed you are to have the opportunity to attend the Shrine and hear Cardinal Bukrke! I agree – he seems to me too – to be a humble and holy man. May God grant us more holy clergy and people to build up the Body of Christ in love.

St. Faustina certainly is a cherished saint – of course by her Polish brothers and sisters – but also among many other groups. She is one to be cherished by all in Christ. 🙂

Dear Jim,

Thanks for your reply. I’ve watched the EWTN coverage from the national shrine at other times but was unable to watch today. May the Lord reward the fervor of those braving the cold weather to participate. Jesus, I trust in You!

I’d like to share my experience of Divine Mercy Sunday at my church on Long Island:

Dear CF,

Thanks so much for that beautiful picture and for sharing your experience. God is always working good, but sometimes He gives us a particular experience to strengthen our faith. May you and all those who experienced this at your parish Church keep trusting in Jesus – for I believe there are hard things coming also for the whole Church.

One of the things Mary told St. Faustina was that this saint was to promote the Divine Mercy and prepare the world for the Second Coming of Jesus. May we all grow closer to Jesus and Mary each day before and until our last day – whenever that may be for us personally and for the world.

Yes, I do believe hard times are coming. That is why I have started a new ministry, Nomen Christi Apostolate, to address these concerns.
Dear CF,

Congratulations on your new ministry… I followed the link to your new blog and website “under construction”. May the Lord bless your efforts to build up the Body of Christ in love, per Mariam. 🙂

Thanks so much! I’m not asking for money now, only prayers and…please spread the word!
