This will undoubtedly be a long-running series. I’ve been bored and checking out christianforums.org, and I came across this guy named Augustine_was_Calvinist. He had a couple of gems:

The Roman church did not even have a Bible until the council of Trent. The Biblical canons from the councils of Hippo and Carthage were regional councils and as such are not binding or dogmatic on Rome. Therefore it took Trent to give the Roman church a Bible.

I would suggest a study of Augustine and the western church at Augustine’s time, as well as a thorough study of the Reformation, for it was Augustine who gave us the Reformation.

Not much you can do with something like this except nod and say, “Whatever you say, bud. Tinfoil hats are over there.”

The poster probably never read what St. Augustine wrote: “I should not believe the Gospel except as moved by the authority of the Catholic Church.” And he must have lost all common sense when he said it was Trent that gave the Church the Bible; so what was the book that Luther edited?

Its my understanding that St. Augustine had some “interesting” interpretations of the “grace” passages that Calvinists normally look to (John 6:44; 1 Tim 2:4), but otherwise he rejected the “perseverance of the saints” (i.e. Eternal Security) believing instead in the “perseverance of the elect” as Catholics do.

On Justification, the Anglican evangelical scholar Alister McGrath: “However, it will be clear that the medieval period was astonishingly faithful to the teaching of Augustine on the question of the nature of justification, where the Reformers departed from it.” (IUSTITIA DEI: A History of the Christian Doctrine of Justification, from the conclusion to Volume 1).

“What MERIT, then, does a man have BEFORE grace, by which he might RECEIVE grace, when our EVERY good merit is produced in us ONLY by grace, and, when God, crowning our merits, crowns nothing else but His own GIFTS to us?” (St. Augustine, Letters 194:5:19)
