My father-in-law truly thought that John Lennon said that they were more popular then Jesus,he only heard half the statement me thinks

the Beatles never made any such claim, but John remarked in an interview that many of their fans viewed them that way.

I think that what John Lennon actually SAID was “We’re more POPULAR than Jesus now.” Not that they were ‘greater’. I’m sure that we can all think of people who were (even briefly) more ‘popular’ than others but over time the greatness of the ‘less popular’ person took hold.

I’m thinking, for example, of some of the very popular British writers who were turning out thrillers right before Agatha Christie started. How many of them are even KNOWN by people today? Very very few. . .
