None of them could meet the standard set by Peter Gunn. 👍

Great responses. Maybe I’ll tally up the strong votegetters and do an all-inclusive poll on "Favorite 1970s cop/detective, that way those who want to vote Columbo can do that, or they can vote Rockford. There has to be an all-time winner!

Mannix was a cooooooool dude.

Great theme music.

I even call my husband, “Joe” when he stops the car quickly and seems to get out before the wheels stop rolling (this was one of Joe Mannix’s best tricks!)

My favorite was Peter Falk’s Columbo.
Yeah, why wasn’t hje on the list?

Actually my uncle was a NYPD detective and he said Barney Miller was the most true-to-life cop show.

Columbo wasn’t included because he was a police detective, not a private detective. BTW, I Love Columbo, too!

if you look at the re-runs to see which ones still play well, Rockford wins hands down. Loved the father-son relationship as well. I think I read that Stuart Margolin who played Angel, the con man, infomer friend (one of my favorite all-time TV characters), was the producer of touched by an Angel, is that right?

You said it! And if you’ll notice that in this poll Rockford has more votes than the competition combined. It’s a great show. Always was, always will be. 👍

The IMDb sez he has indeed directed at least one episode of that show. Cool.

Quincy started in 1976 as part of NBC’s “Mystery Movie” rotation. I think it was the last new show added to it before the Mystery Movie format went belly up in 1978 or so. Then Quincy became a one hour TV show.

THREAD DRIFT – getting away from the '70s

Of shows currenly on I have to say I love Monk. The idea of a detective w/OCD is just over the top. My favorite scene ever, he was in his psychiatrist’s waiting room with another OCD patient. There were four magazines on the coffee table which he arranged in a neat line, then the other patient fixed them in a neat arc, then he . . . .

He might be crazy but he always catches the crook.
