I once heard that Christianity (particularly Catholicism) is a mixture of Greek culture and Jewish heritage. Some “apostasy” happened that left the early Church open to numerous outside (mostly Greek) sources to mess up what Jesus’ original plan for the Church was. And that everything we know about the “soul” was stolen from Socrates (who, apparently, first came up with the idea of the soul historically) and a “soul” is never mentioned in the bible or by Jesus. How can I respond to this?

Well, I suppose the first question to ask is where this garbage came from?

My suspicions are that it comes from a Messianic Jew, an sda, or some similar sect, and which it comes from determines WHY they believe what they are saying is true and WHY they want YOU to believe it is true…

Well, duh, the entire Mediterranean area and beyond were conquered by the Greeks, well technically Alexander was Macedonian, dominating the region politically, linguistically, and culturally for centuries including the first century AD. Even though Roman culture was supplanting the Greek culture, Greek was still the language that dominated the region and the Greek cultural heritage still retained prominence. Latin didn’t eclipse Greek in the West until several centuries later, in the East not at all.

Do you have a source for this?

Well, Greek philosophy did take the pagans quite far along the path of preparing to receive the Gospel.

I’ve heard this too, but I’ve never heard anything to back it up.

If a 'great apostasy" occurred, why is there no great shift in teachings between Scripture and the Early Church? Early Church Fathers?

If the Catholic Church fell into apostasy then that means the gates of Hell prevailed. Jesus said this wouldn’t happen

PS 1ke, Macedonia was still Hellenic even if it was hillbilly Greek

Not so. It is true that some Greek philosophers expressed ideas that contained some truth, but the idea of a “great apostasy” is historical fantasy.

Boy have they ever got that wrong.

Matthew 10:28 And fear ye not them that kill the body, and are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him that can destroy both soul and body in hell.

A simple search of the New Testament proves them wrong.
