Hi!
I am not sure if I am in the right forum for this question. If not…please forgive me.

My sister in law has recently converted to the RC from a Jesus only Oneness faith. Her brother who is a minister in the Oneness faith is on his way to converting to the RC after doing much research. Please pray for him. His question is this. Does the Greek Orthodox church ACCEPT baptism in Jesus name? Thank you for your answers.

The Orthodox baptism is Trinitarian (in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit)but they immerse the candidate fully three times. Hope that helps.

Welcome home, by the way.

Yes. Thank you!!! 🙂 Please pray for the conversion of JNH!! He seems to be on his way!!!

The right forum for a question of the Orthodox Churches is the Non-Catholic forum.

I do not understand the question as pertains to the case you have given. The Catholic Church accepts baptisms done using the Trinitarian formula as valid, it would not accept a baptism in the name of Jesus as valid.

I would assume the Orthodox are the same but the would have to answer.

In general Orthodox churches only accept Orthodox baptisms (trinitarian + full immersion + Orthodox minister). This varies depending on Church. Some accept Catholic/Protestant trinitarian baptisms, some don’t (the Russians). Baptisms in the name of Jesus only would not be accepted. All Orthodox Churches will at least chrismate (or re-chrismate for Catholics) converts, with the view that it will confer all graces received in an Orthodox baptism.

I don’t think they accept any baptism, even Catholic, done by anyone other than their own priests. Neither they nor the Catholic Church would consider valid any baptism done with anything other than the Trinitarian formula since those are the words and instructions of Christ himself.

Some do accept Catholics into Holy Orthodoxy by Chrismation and Penance. Others will Baptize and Chrismate Catholics. I don’t know if the bishops make the judgment for their diocese or if it’s determined at the synodal level,

Posting the question in the Non-Catholic Religions section of CAF might draw some attention from Orthodox who could answer.

I have friends who are former RC who were received into OCA by profession of faith…no rebaptism …no re chrismation.

Not sure if the Orthodox can use oikonomia for a non-trinitarian baptism.

The Orthodox Church would not accept the Jesus’s only Baptism, if he would to become to the Orthodox Faith than he would have to go through the whole thing, i.e. Baptized in the name of the FATHER, SON and HOLY SPIRIT, immersed thrice, chrismated and then he would receive the Holy Eucharist (Body and Blood of our LORD) and all that of course after he had been gone through the catechism and accepted all the dogmas of the Holy Orthodox Church of GOD.

GOD bless you all†††
