Getting tatoos in languages you dont speak or understand is in my opinion, disrespectful and disingenuous.
People will assume you speak greek and you are representing yourself that way.
If you want to feel foolish later in life wait until someone sees your tatoo and then asks you some biblical or medical question about greek. Then you have to say… “uhhhh I don’t speak Greek, I just really really like frat parties and this is what happened after one of them…”
It can be disrespectful but in can be a form of honor. I have a friend who has tattoos in Hebrew, Japanese, as well as her first, a cross that Coptic Christians in Egypt have, which she had done iwhen she was there. She has a very diverse group of friends, including people who are Jewish, Japanese, and Muslim. An Arabic man saw the Coptic tattoo and began speaking to her in Arabic; she explained that she didn’t speak the language and had a good convo about how she came to get it. I want to get a tat in another language for personal reasons but it’s unlikely I will find an accurate translation; I’ll have to settle for English.

Which would misrepresent you as well. Why doesn’t the op just learn Greek and then the tat can be celebratory after the goal is achieved. Then it’s not a decision you might regret later but rather a mark ( litterally) of your accomplishment.
I would love to learn a certian language but it’s difficult to find a good resource, any resource, really.

First, thank you all for the replies. However, with all due respect, I wasn’t asking for approval or your personal opinions on tattoos. I don’t need anyone to “talk to” about it and are fully aware of the Church’s teaching’s on tattoos. I’ve already decided to move forward with the tattoo. I already have several other Catholic type tattoos. Underacloud is correct. The Chi Rho is Greek and therefore I would like the word “Trust” in Greek.

Some of you mentioned that doing this could be considered disrespectful since I don’t know the language. Let me ask you this. Should I not go to a Latin Mass because I don’t know Latin? What if you had the opportunity to obtain an early Hebrew or Greek Bible? Would you not accept it because you couldn’t read it? Our Church is filled with Hebrew, Greek and Latin. I don’t feel its disrespectful that we don’t know all the languages.

Xantippe - Thank you.

Hoosier Daddy - Where did you find this translation?

And what does “California roll” mean? If it is food, I have never heard of it
California roll is a type of Americanized sushi. Just about EVERY special roll at California (well, American) sushi restaurants starts with a base of a California roll.

It’s a kind of US-invented sushi. Hence my suggestion of it as a Japanese-language tattoo for a previous poster’s sis who doesn’t know Japanese.

I have a weird request. I’m going to be getting the Chi Rho tattoo. And above this I would like to get the word “Trust” spelled in Greek. I’ve gone to several English to Greek conversion websites and I’m getting varying conversions. Is there anyone on here who can help me with this? Below are some of the translations I’m getting. Also, would it be proper to get it in all uppercase? If I understand correctly, the spelling is different if it’s a verb or a noun. Thanks!

Εμπιστοσύνη

εμπιστεύομαι

παρακαταθήκη

πίστη

καταπίστευμα

πίστωση

έχω πίστη

έχω πεποίθηση
Mate your best bet is to find someone who can speak Greek. That being said pick between noun or verb. I’ve been thinking of getting a tattoo myself just not sure what yet.

It’s the correct translation.

Hoosier Daddy - It looks to me like the translation of the word you suggested means “wrong” or “mistake”.

Hoosierdaddy is quite a funny guy and quite smart. I am wondering if he gave you that translation as a joke and to make a point, if he did in fact give you the wrong translation. I do not know, I do not speak Greek.

That is my sister. I think what she wants to do is as lame as when somebody gets the year they were born tattooed on them but she strikes me as quite a sensitive girl so I do not want to make jokes to her about it.

I see I’m not going to get any help here. Thanks.
Do you have a Greek Orthodox church in your area? There’s one near me and they have Greek language lessons. Maybe you could enlist help there. Greek isn’t something taught at the average high school.

I might recommend going to your local university (preferably a Christian one that teaches biblical languages) and saying that you are interested in Greek translation services.

Have you asked your parish priest? Priests generally have studied some Greek and some will be pretty knowledgable. And if not, he can probably recommend someone.
