Green and Red Scapulars?

Today I went to a Catholic store. I got a St. Benedict statue, a Crucifix lapel pin, a Crucifix necklace (needs a string, maybe a shoelace will do?), a little statue of Jesus, a Holy Water bottle, a Red Scapular, and a Green Scapular.

I was looking up the Scapular types earlier today. I know you have to be sin free or something along those lines to wear the Brown Scapular. I struggle with sin, so I got a Green Scapular and a Red Scapular. I hear the Red Scapular is for increasing faith and the like, while the Green Scapular is similar to the Miraculous Medal.

Here’s my question: is my understanding correct? Do I have to get them blessed to wear/use them? Do I have to join a society and live up to certain expectations like the Brown Scapular? Thanks! 👍

You know, loading up on “religious stuff” isn’t like a magic wand.
The green scapular is used often for those in need of conversion.

I would wear the crucifix on a chain and relax.
Put the statues in a place of honor in your room.
 
Please don’t just get a shoelace. That’s the height of tackiness. Go on Amazon and find a nice chain meant for a man. If you can’t do that, go to a craft store and buy some “rattail” cord. It is thick, black and consistent.

You don’t have to get anything blessed and no sacramental forbids one from wearing it in sin.

You know who would be really great at helping answer this? Your spiritual director.
 
I’ve heard that about the Green Scapular. I was thinking of putting it in my locker at work. Perhaps God can cause my bosses and coworkers to come back to the faith through it.

I did not know that these guys didn’t need to be blessed. Doesn’t the Brown Scapular require blessings?

As for the shoelace idea, I’m quite the cheapskate. Anything that’s less than $5 or so is good for me. The Crucifix is actually a combo St. Benedict medal/Crucifix.

Your coworkers are no more going to care about your Green Scapuar at work than they would turn into porn addicts because you post a naughty picture.

You’re confusing the use of sacramentals with devotions that are given promises. That that up with your spiritual director.

Just no.

You want to convert people by putting a green scapular in your personal locker but you feel fine wearing an image of Jesus on a shoelace?

Again, if you can’t do a nice, manly chain then go get some nice cord meant for jewelry. Perhaps you could have skipped out of some of the extras and chosen to spend your funds to honor the sacraments you want to use.
 
I guess your right about the shoelace thing. You made me laugh at myself.

As for the Scapular at work, nothing is impossible with the LORD.

I’m not sure you understand how that phrase works.

What you are trying is something the church has forbidden- prostelization. We are called to evangelization. This includes not making sacramentals into talismans we hope catch the eye of others.

My friend is a 3rd order Franciscan. Her Tao often catches attention and many people…even some was probably high flunkie cashing out groceries at Trader Joe’s. It made for a great conversation.

Also, simply hanging religious sacramental wearables as decoration in an undesirable place is bordering on sacrilegious. God, through Mary and the Church, gave us these things to wear and use. If we are not using them we are to store them properly. Hanging out in your locker with your sweaty socks for no other reason than being a conversation piece is hardly giving it the respect it deserves.

This scapular use is approved, and it used for conversion.

Huh. I’ve heard that you can leave the Green Scapular around and pray the prayer, similar to the Miraculous Medal. I guess I was in error. :hugs:

Thankfully, you “know” wrong, with regards to the Brown Scapular.

If you struggle with sin, all the more reason to get a Carmelite Brown Scapular.

Where did you even get that idea you “know” about the Brown Scapular anyway?
 
I thought I read that when you are signed up for the Brown Scapular you promise to stop sinning or something like that. I guess I was mistaken.
 
When are you going to talk with a priest who might help you?

You keep looking for shortcuts. There are none. Really.

absolutely no one would be able to wear it.

You can most certainly put the Green Scapular in an inconspicuous place, and leave it there, for the conversion of others.

I’ve used one too, and used it as a method of conversion, which is how it is meant to be used.

I am posting this information to clarify any possible misunderstanding here, because it isn’t coming across to me that Melodeonist is going to be hanging the Green Scapular in his locker in a way that everyone who walks by might see it.

I would not personally make any assumptions about how it is going to be used, such as saying that it is going to “hang out in his locker with sweaty socks.”
 
What the heck. Today was the first day I wore my Red Scapular and it already broke. I had it under my undershirt. Within the last 20 minutes I felt something funny under my arm, and whaddya know, it was my Red Scapular with the cords snapped.

Why did this happen? I doubt the undershirt caused it. I did wear it in the shower this morning and the lamenated bits got water inside them. Perhaps the glue failed?

What should I do?

This is inaccurate. Every Catholic should wear the brown scapular. Along with the rosary, it is the most powerful sacramental at our disposal. While the green and red scapulars are beneficial, the brown scapular is unmatched. I highly recommend obtaining a brown scapular and finding a priest who will invest you with it. You needn’t be “sin free” to wear it. Consider it to be Our Lady’s mantle. If you honor her by praying the rosary daily and strive for holiness while you wear the brown scapular manifold graces will be poured out upon you.
 
Well, probably taking off cloth items in the shower would be a good idea.

Just reglue it and don’t wear it in the shower.
