I’m going to see the Patriarch of Constantinople in a few days, and I was curious as to how, should to occasion arise, should a Catholic greet the Orthodox Patriarch? Would kissing his hand and kneeling be appropriate?

How blessed you are! First, you would ask for his blessing, saying “Your All-Holiness, may I receive a blessing?” or something like that. Hold your hands palms up with your right hand overlapping your left. He will then bless you and put his right hand onto your hands. You can then kiss it. Kneeling would not be appropriate.

Hope that helps. And please let us know how it goes! 🙂

In Christ,
Andrew
