There will be no gloating by me about the ongoing sad events at Notre Dame, as Lutherans have no room for gloating.

I personally have no problem with these two schools having the President speak. I see how conservatives are regularly shouted down by those using brown shirt tactics on college campuses, and I do not believe in that type of attempt to silence the free flow of ideas that should occur on college campuses.
What I am saddened by is the covering of Christian symbols at Georgetown, and the awarding of an honorary degree at ND. I know this pains many Catholics here at CAF and all over the country. I share in your pain, and join with you in your prayers for a renewed valuing of life on college campuses, Catholic and Lutheran.

Hi JonNC, I personal do not care for the President to speak at any religious school. Just on the basis of his promotion of murder of the innocent. The nerve of the President to even have asked for religious symbols to be covered up and the dumbness of the schools to comply is dumbfounding. There will be no free flow exchange of ideas though. It is going to be his view and opinion heard only. Then the ND is going to give him an honorary degree. This is a huge joke. All we do like you said is pray. Thank you for your prayers.

The nerve of the President to even have asked for religious symbols to be covered up and the dumbness of the schools to comply is dumbfounding…
If it is true it is dumbfounding.

It’s a Catholic school. The response should be “we thought you knew this was a Catholic school…NO! we will not change a thing.”

It’s true. I’ve seen photos of how it was done, too.

Though in fairness it was just the IHS over the platform.

Yeah, “just.”

Absolutely. Why would he want to GO to or accept an invitation to speak at a particular location and then ask to COVER UP the icons & signs that give the place its IDENTITY. That’s like going to a steak house and asking that all the meat items on the menu get covered over. It is, quite frankly, the technical definition of: stupid.

Another distrubing thing about the whole mess is the small number of Catholics who responded to the signing of the petition. Only 350,000. We’re not asking anyone to give up their life in the coliseum, just to sign a petition from your own den or living room. I was expecting a million signatures at least.

“I wept when I saw my friends arrested and taken to jail,” Scarborough disclosed. “They almost broke the arm of a priest who appeared to be in his 80s, by dragging him on the ground.”
Catholic.org Fr. Weslin
I’m horrified that a Catholic Priest and President of a Catholic University is presiding over what amounts to the persecution of Catholic Priests and Laity! What on earth is Fr. Jenkins allowing, nay, encouraging to happen at Notre Dame?! I mean really, arresting an 80 year old Priest on a Catholic campus for speaking about Catholic things? Arresting Dr. Keyes as well?
Keyes charges Fr. Jenkins with abuse of authority. Also to be present at press conference will be others arrested, including Ed Schaub, a New Mexico man who was sexually abused by a priest as a boy. Mr. Schaub spent 3 days in jail after being arrested at Notre Dame.
Catholic.org Dr. Keyes
I’m shocked at what is happening at Notre Dame! Appalled!!!

I don’t have much to add to the good points that have already been made, but I’d like to throw in Luke 3:8 …

“Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of penance; and do not begin to say, We have Abraham for our father. For I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.”

(Or, as someone said on a recent thread, it sometimes seems like a lot of Protestants are better Catholics than Catholics. :ehh:)

Even if they weren’t going to give Obama a degree it would be wrong. IMO, the invitation to speak is an honor. Why are they honoring someone who at one time actually said that he had no problem with infanticide?

This is different from having someone come to speak. This speech isn’t about expressing ideas for the sake of discourse. A commencement speaker is picked because it is thought that he would have something to say to the graduates. Invitng someone implies approval of what the speaker stands for.

IMO, inviting Obama to speak at a Catholic graduation makes no sense. What is the university trying to say with this invitation?

I see what you’re saying, and there is validity to your point.

Having just listened to President Obama’s speech, I would have to say that it didn’t turn my stomach as much as the speech by President Jenkins did.

P.S. I’d been thinking about altering my Profile anyhow, but after Fr. Jenkins’ speech … well, this just seemed like an especially appropriate time to do it. My religion has not changed, of course, but I’m putting “Christianity” in my Profile where I had previously put “Roman Catholic”.

IMO, today is a very tell tell sign. I see it as the beginning of the split in the Church, what will become the progressive American Catholic Church(ex ND) and the traditional Roman Catholic Church I’ll be staying their member, thank you). the fact that many News outlets, including Fox repeatedly say most catholics support fr jenkins and support Obama is incorrect because they are including all who claim to be Catholics, including those who are Catholic in name only and do not practice the faith in accordance to the Laws of the true Church.
I’m dissappointed and appauled at the audacity and arrogance of jenkins, Obama and the students. I wonder how many of them are true, practicing catholics, my guess is not many.
Truth is, Notre Dame has barely been turly catholic for years. My family has had the opportunity to be there several, several times for FB games. On one occasional we went to the student’s Mass on Sunday morning in the Basilica. Right before the Eucharistic Prayers, the Pries annonunced that it was the taditional at ND to remain stabding during Concecration. I looked down the Pew and clearly told my husband and children to kneel. We were in the back, and we were the only ones kneeling. My heart was broke at that moment and I never felt the same about ND after that, although I remained a supporter.
Not after today. Asa matter of afct I am looking for imformation of how a University has their ‘catholic’ stabding removed, I would be very interested in helping with getting ND removed as a catholic University out of respect and diginity for the unborn who are slaughtered at the hands of these politiicans who support, propagate and pass these laws.
Also can someone tell me why Pelois, Sebilusma nd Bidne are not ex communicated and refused Communion?

Peter,
I’m not going to criticize your decision, as I have significant respect for you and your opinions, just draw a parallel.
In my OP, I said Lutherans had no room to gloat. Here’s one reason why. If one goes to the website of Gettysburg College (just on example), one has to search high and low for any mention that it is a Christian college, much less Lutheran. Neither word even appears in its mission statement. So while Georgetown cover ihs up for one speech, some Lutheran colleges seem to cover it up on their mission statement. On the contrary, when my daughter was considering colleges, she looked seriously at Belmont Abbey, near Charlotte. Unabashedly Catholic, and clearly filled with the Holy Spirit. You could feel it.

My point, I think the Holy Spirit finds it easier to use us as a conduit if we are honest and clear about what we are. I know you are a proud Catholic, and Father Jenkins shouldn’t influence that, anymore than wayward Lutherans effect my identification as Lutheran.

BLessings,
Jon

Why are you doing that? I don’t understand your thinking. Would you mind explaining, please.

Yes, it was almost as though he was giving a campaign speech for the President.

During the controversy I had been thinking the university just wanted the prestige of a presidential visit. But no. This Catholic university president went out of his way to heap praise on the very pro-abortion U.S. president.

I was ashamed for Notre Dame, for Catholicism, and for the students who have apparently been subjected to unadulterated political leftism for the past four years.

Actually, I’m relieved to hear that. I remember some masses in the Basilica when the congregation sat during the consecration. 😦

I believe that Christianity is one religion (although I respect the opinion of Evangelicals and others who say that Protestantism and Catholicism are two different religions). So strictly speaking having “Religion: Christianity” in my Profile is most accurate, even though I never shy away from telling people that I’m Roman Catholic (in communion with the Pope).

I can’t deny, however, that I get a guilty pleasure from the fact that my Profile said “Religion: Roman Catholic” prior to Fr. Jenkins’ speach, and “Religion: Christianity” shortly after it. 👍 (Note: That’s an icon of me holding out my wrist so you can slap it. The similarity to the “thumbs up” sign is just a coincidence. :D)

Good point, and thank you. 🙂

Can anyone explain what exactly the role of a bishop is? Who says what the responsibilities of a diocesan priest, religious priest, sister are? Who can “defrock” a priest? When the South Bend bishop refused to attend Notre Dame’s commencement, I was happy to hear someone in my beloved Church stand up. However, why didn’t the bishop tell Fr. Jenkins he could not have Obama and could not give Obama an honorary degree?
Why didn’t the bishop tell Jenkins that ND will lose its official church recognition as a Catholic institution if it had Obama and gave him an honorary degree?

Why didn’t the pope take a stand on N.D.?

I can understand the graduates not understanding what is wrong with Obama giving the commencement speech at ND… they are in their 20s, and they really haven’t lived yet. But Fr. Jenkins…what he did was scandalous. Here we have the Catholic church, which is run by males, pope on down, telling us women we must not have abortions, even if it’s life threatening, and we can’t have the morning after pill if we’ve been raped. I particularly remember the excommunication of the 11 year old girl and her mother for letting her daughter have an abortion after she had been raped by her father. Now we have a Catholic priest at one of the top Catholic universities of the country inviting staunch abortionist and killer of infants surviving abortion to give the commencement speech and given an honorary degree. What does this say to women? What does it say to the world about women in the church? It’s terrible.

Notre Dame - Our Lady. Defiled by a priest (another Christ). It breaks my heart.
