What was Rasputin?

He seems to be depicted today as an evil man, as possessed by demons.

But was this really the case? I wondered if perhaps he was a bit like Padre Pio – was Rasputin given gifts from God. The difference, it seems to me, was that while Padre Pio responded to those gifts accordingly, if the stories about the “Mad Monk” are true, Rasputin did not (he was, apparently, a womanizer, among other things). Rasputin supposedly healed Prince Alexei, for example; I find it difficult to believe that demons would give him the power to heal or to do any good.

Rasputin’s powers: from God or from the devil? Any thoughts?

I have watched a few documentaries about him, I have read articles about him - check up the background for the religious group that he belonged to - check up this for some info en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khlysty

Plus, look what happened there, poeple were so fed up with the Czar’s wife being completely under the influence of the monk - it pretty much helped stir up the revolution.

On the religious level, yes, Devil can also perform miracles - Jesus warns us against that - read Matthew 24,23-26 - that is why Jesus says that we will know if someone is under the influence of the Holy Spirit after the fruits - not after the signs and wonders - these can come from evil spirits too.

He was a fornicator and a drunkard according to everything I have read about him.

Just look at the attempts on his life and what finally killed him. This dude was seriously bad.

Gregory Rasputin was not a priest.

He was not a monk (he was married and had children in his home village of Pokrovskoe).

He wasn’t even Orthodox.

He was a member of a flagellant sect–the khlisty.

However, he gave himself the trappings of a staretz (spiritual elder) and fooled a great many people, even St. John of Kronstadt.

Remove the R-A-S from his name and what do you have?
AS bad as Putin is, I am not sure that he is in the same league as Rasputin.

He should have died from a knife wound, but he lived. He might have been poisened severely (dispute on that). Then he was shot several times, beaten, wrapped in a sheet, and thrown in the river in winter. His body was pulled out later, and his hands were reaching up. The autopsy confirmed he was alive when thrown in. He died of hypothermia. Seriously. This dude was bad. I have seen it said that an angel held him down until the demon let go and the man died.

Sadly, Putin is not yet finished. He is former KGB and he knows the ways of communism very well. He has made himself Prime Minister (dictator) of Russia. I worry that bad things are on the horizon for the poor people of Russia.

I agree 100%.

Paraphrasing an old adage: You can take Putin out of the KGB but you can’t take the KGB out of Putin. 😉

Yeah, but the thing is, Rasputin also (allegedly) healed Prince Alexei, which would appear to be something good, ergo…

Besides, my understanding of that passage was that evil spirits would just cause marvels to get attention, but only God could heal people, which is why this is such a head-scratcher for me.

Try to google for all kinds of ‘alternative’ healing methods, like reiki, bioenergotherapy, yoga, and I do not know what else. There will be plenty of cases were people were actually healed. The problem is that those healings either do not last, or you end up getting healthy but having a spiritual/emotional problem. So well, yes Prince Alexei was healed, but in some ways, Rasputin contributed to the fall of the dynasty - the mother of the prince (Alexandra) was under almost control of Rasputin - something that ultimately led to the fall of the dynasty. Maybe they would have been better off if Alexei was not healed by Rasputin and his wife didn’t come under his total control after all? Maybe all would have lived…

*(…) His (Czar) efforts to oversee the war left domestic issues essentially in the hands of Alexandra. As a German she was extremely unpopular. The Duma was constantly calling for political reforms. Political unrest continued throughout the war. Cut off from public opinion, Nicholas refused to see how tired the people were of his dynasty and how much the common people hated his wife. He had been repeatedly warned about the destructive influence of Grigori Rasputin but had failed to remove him. Nicholas had refused to censor the press and wild rumours and accusations about Alexandra and Rasputin appeared almost daily. Alexandra was even brought under allegations of treason due to her German roots. Anger at Nicholas’s failure to act and the extreme damage that Rasputin’s influence was doing to Russia’s war effort and to the monarchy led to his (Rasputin’s) murder by a group of nobles, led by Prince Felix Yusupov and Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, a cousin of the Tsar, on 16 December 1916… *

Strangely, Rasputin predicted that if anyone from the Czar’s family will contribute to his death, the whole family will die out. Which happened. To me, that sounds like a very disturbing man.

I didn’t think that he actually healed the Prince. The Prince had hemophilia, and Rasputin helped ease the boy’s suffering during bleeding episodes. That’s not the same as actually healing the hemophilia.

Is this correct?

That is correct, the boy was never healed of his condition, merely the intensity of the symptoms (may his soul and those of his family rest in peace).

Correct. Various studies have indicated the hypnosis can ease the intensity of bleeding and hemorrhaging episodes; this meshes well with the numerous references to Rasputin’s hypnotic ability.

Rasputin was nothing like Padre Pio…Pio was holy and pure…Rasputin was evil and corrupt…He was a sexual predator, and a fraud

Stop lisening to western propaganda lies putin was elected…Putin is a russan hero…and my hero…
He’s not allowing the west to push russia around …he’s pushing back…
I see only God’s blessing s For Holy Mother Russia…Господе Благослови Свету Мајку Руссију…
God may yet use russia to chastise the decadent west …hopfully soon…👍

Rasputin had horrible eyes - he looks like a villain. It’s insulting to compare him to a Saint like Padre Pio 😦

:sad_yes:
Rasputin was wellknown for his extreme antinomianism…He actually taught that we should all  sin as much as possible in order to give God something to forgive us for–like we  needed to go out & find stuff!

Yes, that’s true.:sad_yes:

In any case, I truly believe that Rasputin was an evil man. A very evil man. There is a good case to be made, that without his influence on the royals, that it would have been much harder (maybe impossible) for the Communists to succeed in staging the revolution.
Certainly, he never did anything positive…Well. He did appear to be able to help Alexei’s suffering, but I have sometimes wondered if he simply had folks so hypnotized that they thought he was helping…Or he could, possibley, have been slipping the boy some kind of meds that would relieve his stress levels & pain.
He never, you see, ever was able to help Alexei from a distance…which would rule out the czarina’s illusions that Rasputin’s prayers were her son’s only hope.
I personally believe he was a fraud, a conman. Like a lot of other
so-called “healers” who dress their actions up in religious dress for acceptance, when all they do, is either fraudulent, or from a devilish kind of origin…
