After randomly reading about groundhogs day I learned that it has pagan orgins:eek: After reading this I was thinking it would be bad to celebrate it in any way. Not that groundhogs day is something you really celebrate but none the less. I have also read that the orgin could be based off christianity. I just wanted feelings and thoughts about this and how you feel.
 
It may originate from anywhere, but now it’s just for the pure fun of it. Everything is decided ahead of time anyway. Sure, why not.

They say that the Christmas tree and advent wreaths have pagan origins too.
 
I didn’t even know there was a “celebration.” IMO, you’re way over-thinking this.
 
Actually I totally agree I am overthinking this I just wanted some thoughts.😉
 
What’s there to celebrate besides a rodent somehow having “better” weather predicting abilities than modern technology, based on what wikipedia details as nothing more than a weird way to rectify two conflicting calendar systems?

Groundhogs are good for target practice, not meteorology.
 
You can always celebrate Candlemass instead. I think its much more beautiful than celebrating some silly rodent.

It’s fun for everyone but the poor groundhog who gets yanked out of a sound sleep, not to mention a nice warm den, to be held up for the media’s cameras in a cold, often blustery, winter’s, day. I’d bite! 😃
 
If Puxtahawny Phil sees his shadow, he gets scared and goes back in for 6 more weeks of winter. If he does not, winter only lasts for another month and a half. 🤷

I’m quite certain you can find someone who claims that every major holiday - Christian and not - can be traced back to “pagan origins” of one description or another. And even if Groundhogs Day were of some pagan origin, what would you want us Catholics to do? Turn off coverage of Puxatawny Phil on Goodmorning America? How else is GD celebrated these days?

uh it is a marketing event invented by the chamber of commerce and business owners in a small PA town to attract tourists.

if you are not actually in Punxatawney or watching old Bill Murray movies, what exactly is it you are celebrating?

It is only Jan. 22 but this gets my vote already as most inappropriate post for the TC forum (and that is saying a lot)

I have never known anyone who “celebrates” Groundhogs Day.
 
Lots of things Catholics do have pagan origins. Like the Christmas tree, for example. Or the traditionally Catholic (yet now abolished) Rogation Days and the Ember Days. And let’s face it, we worship the God of the Israelites: El Elyon, El Shaddai, El Elohim, etc. The Canaanites’ supreme deity had these exact names…

Does that mean that we should throw out and strike out all the references to the Jebusite and Canaanite deity in Genesis where Abraham recognizes him to be the true God of the universe? Certainly not.
 
Groundhog day is on the feast day of The Presentation at the temple.
