Group Wants Christian Coup

…Christian Exodus activists plan to take control of sheriff’s offices, city councils and school boards. Eventually, they say, they will control South Carolina. They will pass godly legislation, defying Supreme Court rulings on the separation of church and state.

“We’re going to force a constitutional crisis,” said Cory Burnell, 29, an investment advisor who founded the group in November 2003.

“If necessary,” he said, “we will secede from the union.”

They’ve been making this noise for a year or more. Nothing’s changed yet.

It’s a utopian experiment. God bless them. I would like to see more utopian experiments. Faith moves mountains. Perhaps we have lost faith, lost hope. Perhaps we have been asking for too little.

I live in SC and these folks only need to move into 2 counties and they will have achieved a Christian–Protestant majority in the whole state. Just hope they’re not of the Bob Jones-variety protestant.

Good riddance to chaff like this group! Secession? Speaking as someone who is not conservative but who is at least sympathetic to conservative arguments, I must say these kinds of people give conservatives a bad name.

Don’t they study history? Look what happened the last time South Carolina seceded.

They sound like the Christian Reconstructionists.

**But Christian Exodus activists insist that they will forge ahead, even if they end up polarizing the Christian community. **

So much for unity among Christians 😦 This is why there must not be Catholic parties - faith always ends up being dragged into the mire as a result of the less than health political atmosphere, which pollutes what it touches

"We want to separate the wheat from the chaff," DiMartino said.

And who says what counts as chaff ?

I live in South Carolina. I personally do not feel like this could happen because of the federal intervention that would take place. While a more utopian society might seem like a good idea to some, this kind of rhetoric disturbs me. The main reason is that who would control this so called government? Would there be religious tolerance for all faiths? The last I read on the percentages, South CArolina was only 3 percent catholic. We would very much be in the minority. Any one would have to believe that the fundamentalist would control the agenda of the government. Living in South Carolina all my life, I can almost say with certainty the state religion would be evangelical fundamentalism. This very idea is why seperation of Church and State is so important. I went to a so called Christian college where a fundamentalist view was pretty much forced on everyone and I can tell you I felt like I was living in some sort of of opression. So ironically this concept promoted in the name of religious freedom would actually create a religious opression.

Unfortunately, this “Christian Coup” will probably not include Catholics. I have a feeling that many in this group do not consider Catholic, Christian.

Can we secede from the union as well? I say we nominate Karl Keating for president. 👍

The last time South Carolina tried to secede, they did not succeed.

It is still an interesting development. Someone started a thread quite some time ago on finding a homeland for Catholics.

A ‘homeland’ for Catholics? Catholicism = Universal. That kind of rhetoric is sounding too much a bit like White Nationalism / Neo-Nazism for me (we need a home for all white racists so we can segregate ourselves from the ‘scum’)…

Not to worry SemperFi. It was a very tongue in cheek thread replete with hyperbole and exaggerated suggestions. A little bit of letting off steam.

I take NO comfort in the possibility that Any zealot group would “get control” of any government body. The very idea is anxiety provoking in the extreme.

From the article:

“But DiMartino is not worried about the naysayers. When he explained Christian Exodus to the man who sold him his home in Pickens County, he said, the salesman gave him a high-five.”

I love how he’s using the salesman as his example of the support he has. I’m pretty sure he could have said that he planned to eat babies and sacrifice animals in his new home and the salesman would have high-fived him, if it furthered the chance of sealing the deal.
