I’ll start this by describing a more basic problem: the way I speak.
People tell me when I talk, more than half the time I sound like I’m ticked. If you want a visual representation, try imagining someone who breathes fire with every word.
I don’t mind this around people who I’m on decent terms with. However, when I hear it from people I’ve grown to generally dislike, I just gotta ask: What about me? You think I like the way you talk? Don’t you oughta look in the mirror?
I guess what makes this all the more funny is that it’s not just because they sound ticked when they talk too. Take my mom for instance, we’re on good terms now but she’s long admitted that I got my manner of speaking from her. She too used to tell me that I needed to fix my tone (she still does it but not as harsh anymore).
A less happier example would be my brothers. They tell me as if everything I say is an attack, a rant, or some other splurge of foul temper.
Meanwhile, I’m just sitting there, not being able to say: “What about me? You think you don’t sound wrong to me? You think every word out of your lips embodies gentlemanly eloquence? If you want the truth, all I’m hearing is a culture of narcs and the Church of Gordon Ramsay.”
Now you take those feelings and magnify it to the size of my generation and significant portions of its culture. People like them have no form of moral consistency as far as my Catholic faith goes yet they’re the ones who see themselves fit to preach to me, to give me sermons on how to be ‘sociable’ and ‘understood’.
As if a society can ever understand something it popularly, eagerly, and increasingly rejects…
Honestly, I can forgive this type of youthful inconsistency (being still fairly young myself) but only so long as I don’t see it mixed with the superiority complex that just seems to plague at least half of my generation. I am tired of them calling me lazy and selfish while I struggle to keep my mind together just to do my best and help my family pay the dues. I’m disgusted and confused by people who call me arrogant when I can barely string two words of confidence about myself. Heck, if it’s any indication, I can already hear them whispering in my head as I write this, giving cause to doubt the very substance of this paragraph.
I’ll keep telling them to shut up in my mind at least so you can take it as a sign that I’m still far away from snapping.
Still, the only thing that really burns me is the hypocrisy of my generation.
