What should I do with the ever growing pile of crosses and chains that is mailed to me from the many different Catholic charities requesting money?

I just don’t know what to do with them anymore. Today I held my breath when I opened another swollen envelope. Thankfully my daughter said she would take it and add it to her growing collection this time.

What should I do? I don’t wear these mailed items and I certainly can’t throw them away. Does anyone have some good ideas? Please help!

In the breeze way of our church , there is a table that has the bulletins, some rosarys in bags, prayer cards, medals and anything else that has been left there for people to use. All have been blessed by our Priest. Thats how I got my rosary and M.M. Maybe you could leave them in a dish by the entrance for others to use. Tim

I would probably mail them to random addresses in the phone book. who knows, perhaps you will help someone that wouldnt help themselves otherwise.

your local DRE can use them as give-aways for CCD for retreats, vbs, games etc.

I agree with the above posters - find a way to give them away - either at church or find a mission that wants them. You can also auction them on e-bay, and then donate any money you get from them to a charity (maybe the one who sent the item to you in the first place?)

Thanks everyone! These are all great ideas. My local DRE will be getting a very full envelope from me one of these days.

Great thread! Mine don’t tend to just be crosses, but also rosaries, miraculous medals, and other medals. I feel bad that they sent them, but I can’t just throw 'em away. I think I will donate them to our DRE as well.

Don’t forget about your RCIA, too - they can always use little “welcome” gifts for the participants. 🙂

My DRE is grateful for all such items to use as prizes. Also cards, calendars etc that can be used in cut and paste exercises.

I found a chaplet rosary that I don’t use any more that I found in our church’s oratory area. I’m planning on returning it there along with other religious items that I don’t need.

I have been having the same problem with all the extra key chains and rosaries I get. With the rosaries, I am thinking about putting each one in a baggie along with a card that explains how to pray the rosary and hand it to someone in need. It could be a friend, neighbor or anyone else. What they do with it is up to them, but if it helps even one person, that is good enough for me!

you could, with your pastor’s permission, place such objects in a little basket in your adoration chapel, and perhaps he would bless them if you don’t know if they have already been blessed.

I made a bunch of rosaries a few years back with the idea of selling them.

Result, I have a bunch of rosaries, beads, crucifixes, medallions, findings…

and I’ve started making them again…

I’ve been putting a couple in the bags of food I bring for the poor. I figure send 'em out into the universe, and God will get them to people who need them.

Great idea to give them to the RCIA director. People becoming Catholic often don’t have many of the “goodies” that we Catholics aquire over the years. (ever see the people with about 50 medals around their neck? I looks like a millstone! :P)

Personally, I only wear a crucifix, scapular and a St. John Vianney medal.

Give them to local schools to give to the children.

Give them to local orphanages.

Put them on your stuffed animals.

Put them in the back of your church so anyone who wants them can have them.
