I’ve never been quite clear on whether our Guardian Angels are literally physically at our sides at all times, only, of course, just invisible to us? Or watching over us from afar. I’ve seen plenty of artwork depicting these Angels as being literally at our shoulder, or behind us.

Because the Angels are Spiritual beings they are not bound by the space-time constraints that we are bound by.
They can literally be at our side and in the presence of GOD simultaneously, this Jesus Himself revealed it to us:
Matthew 18:10 See to it that you do not despise even one of these little ones. For I say to you, that their Angels in heaven continually look upon the face of my Father, who is in heaven.

I posted this link from New Advent on another CAF thread asking about Guardian Angels. I think that it has some interesting information regarding Angels. There is info. from Scripture, and other interesting information:

They are with us and they are with God. They are where we need them to be.
