(((CFLJames))…I think the dark presence you are referring to is Uziel not Uriel…Uziel was the dark angel portrayed in the “Prophecy” films…-other info sources portray him as working under Gabriel and he was “sent” to earth-whether he is “fallen” or not is not clear…

Asking one’s Guardian angel for help or this or that seems fine, but even that sentence “Our Guardian Angels are there for us - and we should use them as often as possible and be in a relationship with them.” …would you say that you use someone you consider to be a “close friend”? 🤷 You might ask them for favors but they’re certainly not yours to use.
I appreciate your sensitivity to the words I have used. But I have it on good authority that our Guardian Angels WANT us to ask them for any good deed. They receive tremendous glory and honor in heaven for successfully assisting God’s children in their struggle to attain to the heavenly family.

I almost dare say that a request to our guardian angel is taken as a commandment (subject to Divine consent) since they or themselves bound by love of God to protect us and watch over us.

James

Since only God has named our guardian angel, how do we address them without a name?

I talk to mine all the time (have a name for him which I understand is not something we can do since they are superior to us)…so how do I address him in my daily chat?
They way I consider it is we all have a mom and a dad. And what do we all call them? Mom and Dad.

We all have guardian angels so wouldn’t be appropriate to just call them what they are to us? I.E. Guardian angel or as the prayer includes, Guardian Dear.

Uriel was recognized as an archangel in the Church until the 8th century-He still is recognized as St.Uriel…anyway-…it is an example of 'angel names"…not a debate on Church status…I have to wonder though what in the world would have prompted a Pope to think he could erase an archangel from Church tradition honored by all Popes before him- simply because he felt too many were calling on the(then seven) archangels…since Uriel has not gone away in all this time- Divine intervention has made certain Uriel is still known and part of His Church…
Father Serpa’s answer about Uriel in Ask An Apologist Forum:

QUOTE

If the being is in heaven, then it is a saint. However, the Catholic Church does not consider Uriel an angel, let alone a saint, because Uriel is only found in some Old Tesatament apochryphal writings.

…if Father Serpa is the last word on these forums-then so be it here-however that doesn’t seem to be the general consensus in other Catholic areas on the internet or in people’s hearts…

I have a question regarding angels.

Are angels equal to humans in the eyes of God? Are they below us?

I had a protestant friend argue with me on Friday night about angels, and how they are not that important (for lack of a better word to summarize what he said),

I was trying to discuss this thread on this forum he made ME confused.

So if my question is a little confusing, I am sorry.😦

Yes. We can ask them to help us with many things and they will do so as long as it accords with God’s will. We can ask them to pray for us, protect us, guide us, fight evil alongside us, etc. Many, many things they can do for us. It’s too bad that most people don’t recognize the relationship humans have with these messengers from God.

And yes - they are always there - waiting, hoping we’ll ask for their assistance. How would we like to be ignored every day, year after year? 😉 I have a working relationship with St. Michael and consider him a very good friend and helper. He’s helped me out of some real jams. 😃

He is in the book of 2 Esdras conversing with Enoch. Although it is an aprocryphal work and not binding doctrine, Uriel’s speech and actions appear quite genuine and holy. He is an archangel in good standing with God as far as I can see.

We can’t hold Aquinas at fault for that, though. It wasn’t official Church teaching at the time, I don’t think?
Actually, I believe Luther taught it before the Church!
This caught my attention, as you might have guessed 😉
Did Luther believe in the existance of Guardian Angels? I did not know that. Can you tell me where he says it?

Well, I guess that depends on your idea of equal. I am a non-Catholic, so I wouldn’t attempt to instruct you in this. But, I will share my thoughts:

Look at God’s creation and human salvation. Humans were the epitomy of God’s creation. It is said of humans that they were made in the image and likeness of God. That wasn’t said of angels. Only humans can partake of the salvation that God has planned for us. Angels will never know that.

They know the concept, but never being human, they cannot understand on an experiential level. And of course, there’s the passage about humans judging angels in the world to come. There’s also the passage that all angels are ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation.

I don’t think it’s useful to define either humans or angels as equal or unequal before God. Each were created for different purposes and have different inherent natures. We know for sure that the angels worship the Holy Trinity. And we know that they are sent to minister to us and serve us.

But, even if we humans are somehow a “greater” creature than the angels, we should be humble in spirit and recognize them as our helpers, friends and allies and respect them greatly. And they are not powerless. God has endowed them with mighty powers to fight, to heal and many other things.

It depends on the Protestant, but if they are Baptist or fundamentalist, they really downplay angels. They tend to equate being friends with angels and asking them to help us as somehow forbidden. And of course, anything that resembles Catholic spirituality is frowned upon.

Hope that helps.

I respect Father Vincent, but that seems like a weak argument. If Uriel was cast in a bad light in those writings or appeared to not be holy then I can see his point. But, it’s clear from those “apocryphal” writings that he was sent by God to help Enoch. 2 Esdras is a wonderful book and it’s a shame it gets so downplayed.

👍 I couldn’t agree with you more on this. Angels are wondrous beings, but because of God’s love for us, we are made closer to God than even the angels.😃 Also during the Mass, we receive Christ’s Body, Blood, Soul, Divinity in the Eucharist. The angels don’t. How they must wonder at Christ’s love for us in all our sinfullness! :bounce: :extrahappy: :rotfl: :signofcross:

Absolutely. There are some things that only humans can participate in, such as the Eucharist, as you indicated. Only we can receive Jesus in this way. Only we can be saved. It is only we who are called children of God.

I love the holy angels and thank God for them. I don’t in any way wish to diminish their great service to the Father and to us. But, we can’t change the fact that we are human just as they can’t change the fact that they are angels. We are two completely different creations and we should accept those differences with humility.

Its not a issue of being cast in a bad light or not.
Father is giving you the Church position on Uriel.
