Hello! I’m returning to my Catholic faith and rediscovering it again as an adult. Can anyone please point me in the direction of Catholic beliefs in regards to angels? In particular, Guardian Angels? A Protestant friend said that they don’t believe that everyone has his/her own angel… But I thought I remembered learning as a child that we each have our own guardian angel.

Any scripture or book recommendations would be very helpful. Thanks so much… kids calling for my help…

St. Thomas Aquinas treated this in his Summa Theologica.

And Scripture:

Hebrews 1:6-7,13-14 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.” 7In speaking of the angels he says, “He makes his angels winds, his servants flames of fire.” 13To which of the angels did God ever say, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”? 14Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

Matthew 18:10 10"See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven

Acts 12:14-15 14When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!” *15"You’re out of your mind," they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”

Psalm 91:11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.

The Church teaching:

CCC 336 From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession. “Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.” Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.

You’re definitely in the right place!

Never trust a Protestant to tell you what Catholics do and don’t believe:rolleyes:

You should read the book “All About the Angels” by Fr. Paul O’Sullivan. It has to be not only the best book on angels I’ve ever read, but the best Catholic book I’ve ever read too! It will make you think very differently about your angel and others’, and even to think differently about the mass and Holy Eucharist.

Thank you so much for the replies… I’m off to check out the book. Thank you! I’m so glad I found this forum.

Welcome back. Although I never really left the Catholic faith, finding these forums renewed my faith and made me appreciate it again. Lots of good info here.

Have you thought about asking God for the name of your angel? Makes the situation a little more real to the human mind and its incessant need to name everything!

3 True stories where the first is a repsonse to your quote.

My sister when she was about 8 or 9 years old, was sitting down in the living room playing with her toys. My mother said to her “Hey Andrea, why don’t you ask your Guardian Angel for His name.” Immediately my sister without hesitation turned to look at the tv and said “It’s Grace” then continued playing like all was normal. My mother asked her where she got that name from and she said it was on the back of the jersey of a sports figure on the tv. We just found it odd that she would know exactly where to look at that moment and come up with the perfect name. I’ve also never heard of any players name who’s last name is Grace in any major sport around 12 years ago.

Another day around the same time maybe a year earlier, my sis had her friend over at a time when my grandmother just had recently passed away. As she lay there on the bed, still saddened about my Grandmother, she asked God to let her know she was ok. Right away she saw a beautiful female angel in white staring at her friend sleeping with a smile. My sister closed her eyes immediately because she was a bit scared but the Angel was gone once she re-opened them.

Another more recent story involving my mother was that she always says a prayer of protection to Her Guardian Angel in the morning but one time she forgot. As she was brushing her teeth, in the faucet itself, she saw a beautiful man in white in the reflection either behind her or to her side. (can’t remember) But just like in the movies, as she’s leaning towards the faucet with her face to get a closer look, some toothpaste dripped on it, and the Angel was gone as soon as she wiped it away. My mother then said a quick “Thank you for the reminder”. 😛

These stories aren’t proof by any means but are still treasured in our family.

There has to be guardian angels. They need to have something to do up there. People must be like cable for them. Something to watch when you don’t feel like doing what you are supposed to be doing.
