I had the same thoughts as you Verebum Caro I too was going to bring up the point about parents ruling their children!!!

I just think that you Former Catholic perhaps had bad experiences about being **ruled badly **and so are clouded in a negative thought process. But there is a positive side of Ruling—Christ is proclaimed as the Universal Prince and King! Catholics honour Jesus in the Feast of Christ The King,we pray that He will rule over our hearts and minds;all kingdoms and peoples are subject to Him.He showed us how He came to rule,by dying on the cross—“The King of the Jews” is what was written on the Cross. So Guardian Angels being Christs’ good rulers; I suggest that you re read The Angels in the Catholic Catechism 328-336

If you want to take a negative side–I certainly have seen “heavy metal satanic bands” and the onlookers give a sign with their hands and shout out “satan rules”!
So you have trouble with Catholics like myself :angel1:who ask and implore their Guardian Angels to “Light and Guard to Rule and Guide” them to follow Christ The King. The followers of darkness do not have the same problem!!

Here is what the Catechism says of Jesus and the Angels 333 “---------They(the Angels) protect Jesus in his infancy, serve him in the desert, strenghten him in his agony in the garden—again it is the Angels who “evangelize” by proclaiming the Good News----”

So my friend it is only the evil angels who would wisper in our ears not to obey ones’ guardian angel----sure we have free will and are free to reject our Guardian Angels’voice or tap on the shoulder–Our Lady could have rejected The ArchAngel Gabriels’call to be The Great Mother of Our Saviour–but she did not–perhaps you would be wise to follow her “yes” and allow your Guardian Angel to Rule your life in Christ.

St.Michael the ArchAngel, protect us from all evil spirits who wonder throught the world seeking the ruin of souls.Amen.

Our Lady could have rejected The ArchAngel Gabriels’call to be The Great Mother of Our Saviour.
There is a huge difference between the concept of calling someone (offering someone an opportunity and information) and *commanding/ordering *someone (controlling another and asserting one’s personal will over another) to do something.

The ArchAngel Gabriel certainly did not command Our Lady to do anything whatsoever, and being an angel, would take great offense to the concept that he personally had disobeyed God’s law of free will by asserting his own personal will over that of a human being in any attempt to dominate and control that human being. The announciation was an invitation, not a command.

Of course you’ve seen gangs, armies, pornographers, and other satanic bands embrace and preach the idea of people commanding, controlling, and dominating others by their force of will. Like I said, free will is God’s law and the angels do not break it, and those who break it are not angels.

Why don’t I start with the word RULE** Former Catholic** as to define terms–

Rule—oxford dictionery—

no.1 Principle to which action or procedure conforms or is bound or intended to conform, dominant custom, canon, test, standard ,normal state of things

no.9 --“Excercise sway or decisive influence over, keep under control, curb,(person, conduct, one’s passions;ruling passion, motive that habitually directs one’s actions);(pass.)consent to follow advice,be guided by”

As anyone can see by the Oxford or “common use” of rule does very much keep in line with the prayer of asking a personal guardian angel to rule over them. They ask their Guardian Angel to “consent to follow advice,be guided by”;they ask their Guardian Angel to “conform” to the rule and “standard” of Christ Crucified.

I could see your point if Christ and the Guardian Angel pulled or pointed a person in oppositive directions ,however Angels being messengers of Christ–they want and will, only what is good for us–our eternal salvation.!!!

Parents rule their children–but it is for love of them that motivates this.Christ too rules our lives ( or a least should) because He loves us.

Our Guardian Angels rule us (if we let them) because they too love us and " light and guide, rule and guard" us here on earth to help us to “conform” to God’s Will and help us keep the Commandments ,wishing for our eternal hapiness.

I honestly cannot see your problem with my prayer to my Guardian Angel Former Catholic(you make out as if you turned away from something bad–like former communist, former Nazi etc!!–Stalin,Hitler too were “former Catholics”)😉

#1 doesn’t apply, as that definition and useage is a noun.
#9 applies in the transitive verb (not pass.) case:
X “rules” Y
X “exercises sway or decisive influence over, controls” Y
If you (X) ask an angel (Y) to rule you (X):
X asks Y to rule (exercise sway or decisive influence over, keep under control, curb), X

(X is not asking Y (to consent to follow advice, be guided by) X (pass.) (you are not controlling the angel))

Anyone personally exercising sway or decisive influence over, keeping under control, or curbing someone is a violation of the divine and universal law of free will.
Angels do not violate God’s laws, not even if you ask them to do so.
Angels do NOT rule, God (and/or Christ as you have pointed out) rules.

English useage is a technical matter. I pointed out a specific technical linguistics problem with a single word as it is used and defined specifically in the English language .

At no time did I ever say that I had any “problem” whatsoever with you or your prayer.
I specifically pointed out that Ithat it was a beautiful old prayer and that although there is a specific technical problem with word useage in English, I couldn’t think of another word that would do to replace it without messing up the flow and meter of the poem.

Hundreds of thousands of Orthodox, Episcopalian, Anglican, Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist, 7th Day Adventist, Evangelical, Charismatic, and non-denominal Christians and Christian contemplatives are former Catholics, including a whole lot of former Catholic priests and nuns who have married and taken up their vocations serving God outside of the auspices of Rome.
It is a violation of the Catechism and an embarrassment to the Catholic Church to treat a baptized Christian person in a less than Christian manner.

Well former catholic I did re read all the posts and especially your ones and YOU DID OBJECT to “rule” and you use the excuse of “rhyme” and “poetry”.For me this is not an issue,I use my God given free will to choose to ask my guardian angel to rule over my thoughts, words or deeds.I do this because my guardian angel who has been appointed by God to protect me,never wants me to sin in thought word or deed.By asking my Guardian Angel to rule my every thought, word or deed is only asking him what Christ demands of me.I trust and pray that I will always do as my guardian angel tells me!!

As for the rest of your comments–May the peace of Christ,be with you.:angel1:

St.Michael the ArchAngel defend us from the malice and snares of the devil.Amen.

Really? I didn’t know that. Thanks for sharing

And thanks for the recommendations also!

So how do we know who’s our guardian angel? Or does it remain a mystery?
Most of us do not know who our guardian angel is but we know a lot about guardian angels generally, though some saints used to see and talk to them!! Here is what Saint Bernard says about them----

A reading from the sermons of St.Bernard.(sermon12 on Ps90)

“He has given his angels charge of you,to guard you in all your ways”.Let the Lord be thanked for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to the sons of men.Let the nations praise him and say that the Lord has done great things for them.Lord, what is man that you make so much of him, that you set your mind upon him.You set your mind upon him,you are solicitious for him,you care for him.Indeed you sent your only Son to him,you infused your Spirit, you promise him the sight of your countenance. And that no being in heaven may rest from the work of caring for us,you send those blessed spirits to minister to us,you assign them to watch over us,you bid them to be our guardians.

"He(God) has given his angels charge of you,to guard you in all your ways."What reverence this saying should instill in you, what devotion it should stir up,what trust it should inspire.Reverence for their presence(guardian angel),devotion on account of their loving care, trust in their protection. They are present, and present to you,not merely accompanying you but watching over you. They are present in order to protect you,in order to help you.Nevertheless, though it is He(God) who gave them this charge,we should not be ungrateful to them, for they obey with such love and help us in such great need.

Let us then be devoted and grateful to such guardians;let us return their love and honour them as much as we can and ought. But let all our love and honour be referred to Him(God) from whom alone we and they derive whatever enables us to show love and honour,or become worthy of love and honour ourselves.

In Him therefore.brethren, let us love his angels with sincere affection;they will be our co-heirs at some future time and in this present time are the guardians and trustees placed in charge of us by the Father. We are now children of God though it does not yet appear.because being children still we are under guardians and trustees and in no different condition from slaves.

Though we are children and the road that lies ahead of us is so long, and not only long but dangerous, what have we to fear with such guardians? They cannot be vanquished, nor led astray, still less can they lead us astray, these beings who guard us in all our ways. They are faithful, they are wise, they are powerful;what have we to fear?Let us but follow them and cling to them, and we shall abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

My Guardian Angel ,I love you,:angel1:light and guard me,rule and guide me.Amen!

They come,God’s messengers of love,
They come from realms of peace above,From homes of never-fading light,
From blissful mansions ever bright.

They come to watch around us here,
To soothe our sorrow,calm our fear;
Ye heavenly guides,speed not away,
Gos willeth you with us to stay.

But chiefly at its journey’s end
‘Tis yours the spirit to befriend’
And wisper to the willing heart,
"O Christian soul,in peace depart.’

To us the zeal of angels give,
With love to serve thee while we live;
To us an Angel-guard supply,
When on the bed of death we lie.:angel1:

The great awesome reality is that God specifically created a guardian angel for each one of us.God created angels before He created this world and mankind.Along with St.Michael our own guardian angel when tested; said that they will obey God! the devil and the other fallen angels are very jealous of the love that we show to God and then through Christ to our own personal guardian angel. It is written in scripture “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you” So we should be very thankfull to God for the gift of our own beautuful guardian angel.I personally am so sorry that I never always let my guardian angel rule and guide or to light and guard my actions. So I try to make up for lost time, by turning to my guardian angel especially in moments of temptation.

I must say that society these days has a loose idea of what an angel is.We have the “Hollywood”–touched by an Angel idea. The idea that a dead person comes back to this earth as an angel to “make up” for some bad deeds. The idea of an angel who comes to this earth to "earn it’s wings etc etc!!! Then we say of a beautiful child that died “she or he was such an angel” or if some stranger does something for us “what an angel” we might say.Just like the person in the earlier thread who regards the organ donor as an angel–I can understand the reasoning behind all the examples given–because ANGELS are angelic beings that do good and they reflect God who is all good and do His bidding.

However these are not a true understand of our own guardian angels–for instance I donate blood every three months and hence save lives: I see it as a good social act to do and a good christian act of charity for love of Christ–to heal the sick! I am also a registered organ donor; for when I die my organs will no longer be needed by me;they might be useful for someone still living.Again I do it for the same reasons as mentioned**- but --I AM NOT AN ANGEL!!**–ask anyone who knows me–“Lord be merciful to me,a sinner”.

So as an earlier person mentioned ,we should have a Catholic based belief in our own guardian angel and what a great gift Gods’ personal messengers are to us.We should thank and praise God for his wonderful angelic friends!

ALL YOU ANGELS AND SAINTS,OH BLESS THE LORD!

It is true, humans are not angels, BUT we can and do make intercession like them through Christian charity, as well as unknowingly. As you see, we are all connected, some don’t know it, some don’t believe it, regardless, it is true. So, I understand that when I watch Touched By An Angel, I realize that Monica and Andrew aren’t REAL angels, BUT at the same time they ARE ministers of Christ in the flesh as humanbeings. So, to really “lighten” things up a bit, the point is to see ourselves also as ministers of Christ as well, and to KNOW that we are favored far more than the angels.

I have found some of the best books on the Holy Angels through the publisher TAN, as I shared earlier, way back on page 1 of the thread.

There are also a few of the Saints that were strongly devoted to their guardian angels, Saint Padre Pio and Saint gemma Galgani whom inspired me over time in my devotion. Both of these Saints have very interesting and profound stories and I would encourage anyone to read about their lives’.

God Bless!:grouphug:
