I’ve never prayed to my guardian angel before, nor do I really know much about guardian angels besides the fact that we have them. Could someone please give me some information about catholic beliefs surrounding guardian angels?
Also, if you could provide me with prayers to my guardian angel. (Is there one “original” or popular prayer to my guardian angel that im missing out on? they seemed to vary almost to ridiculous amounts.) It would be great if there is one to say before bed and during crisis. Thanks as always! 😃

From the Raccolta.

Latin:

Angele Dei, qui custos es mei, me tibi commissum pietate superna hodie (vel hac nocte) illumina, custodi, rege et guberna. Amen.

English:

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom His love commits me here; ever this day (or night) be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

scborromeo.org/ccc/p1s2c1p5.htm

336 From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession.202 "Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life."203 Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.

**202 ** Matthew18:10; Luke 16:22; Psalm 34:7; 91:10-13; Job 33:23-24; Zech.1:12; Tobias 12:12.
**203 **St. Basil, Adv. Eunomium III, I: PG 29,656B.

****Our basic understanding of “guardian” angels comes from the Gospel of Matthew where Jesus said, “Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you, in heaven their angels continually see the face of my Father in heaven.” [Mt. 18:10] In this manner, Jesus revealed to mankind that everyone has a guardian angels. ****

Greetings ErinMagdala,

I wanted to encourage you to pray to your guardian angel as you would talk to a friend. Let me elaborate, your guardian angel has been there with you from the day of your birth. Your angel probably knows you a lot better than you know yourself. I may be labelled wierd, but when I pray to my guardian angel, I speak to them as a friend and thank them for watching over me and praying for me.

If you are not comfortable with this, I would recommend the prayer given by a previous poster.

There is a book that might be of immense help to you it is called St. Micheal and the Angels. It is put out by Tan books. I am not sure if you can get this book or not becuase it may be out of print, but it has solid Church teachings in it about guardian angels. If you cannot get the book let me know, and I will send you copies of the relevant chapters regarding guardian angels.

There is a prayer that is mentioned in here by Cardinal Newman to his own Guardian Angel that I thought I would share with you.

My oldest friend, mine from the hour
When first I drew my breath;
My faithful friend, that shall be mine,
Unfailing till my death.

Thou hast been ever at my side;
My Maker to thy trust
Consigned my soul, what time he framed
The infant child of dust.

Thou wast my sponsor at the font;
And thou, each budding year,
Didst whisper elements of truth
Into my childish ear.

And thou wilt linger round my bed;
When life is ebbing low;
Of doubt, impatience and of gloom,
The jealous, sleepless foe.

Mine when I stand before the Judge;
And mine, if spared to stay
Within the golden furnace till
My sin is burned away.

And mine, O Brother of my soul,
When my release shall come;
Thy gentle arms shall lift me then,
Thy wings shall waft me home.

God Bless.

I have read all about St Josemaria and his guardian angel and St Pio and his guardian angel but this is probably the one teaching of the Church with which I have trouble. When I think of all the victims of sexual abuseI can’t believe that they had a guardian angel assigned to protect them. 😦

Our guardian angels cannot interfere with the free will of anyone. They are there to lead us to accept God’s grace and grow in His love. When a child dies in an accident, it is not because their guardian angel was lazily looking in another direction.

God’s holy will is paramount in the lives of each of us. The angel obeys the will of God.

I pray every day to my Guardian Angel and have for a long time now.

The guardian angel.

This idea gets getting used to. It is not something I ever thought about.

I can’t say I formally pray to my guardian angel, but I do have talk with and offer my thanks for their guidance and assisstance.
I realize that is probably more of just a matter of semantics, but it’s more casual

I will say this and it’s been a real fruitful experience for me… I pray the chaplet to St Michael and the Holy Angels consistantly. (meaning not necessarily daily but very often)

I have found that the formal interessions that are part of the prayer (asking for the true charity, hearty obedience, humility, etc etc) have grown in me.

And trust me, knowing me, this isnt something I have developed on my own. But I have no doubt that they are the results of the angels interession on my behalf for these graces.

Greetings TrueLight,

You can ask your guardian angel to help you get used to the idea. I like attending the masses on September 29 - St. Michael and the Archangels, and then October 2 - Guardian Angels [which is however abrograted by the fact that it is the Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time] 🙂

God Bless.

I, too, like attending those Masses and tomorrow with start a novena to the Holy Angels. 🙂

Christ himself taught of guardian angels.

At that time the disciples approached Jesus and said, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” … "See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father. (Matthew 18:1-3,10)

Psalm 91, one of my personal favorites, also speaks of angels assigned to the role of guardian.

For he commands his angels with regard to you,
to guard you wherever you go.
With their hands they shall support you,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.

(Psalm 91:11-12)

The prayer I use is “Angel of God, my Guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here. Ever this day be at my side, to light, to rule, to guide. Amen.”
