Hi,

I read somewhere that a person can have more than one guardian angel. Is that true?

It also included some excerpts from the lives of some saints that knew that their guardian angel (or someone else’s guardian angel) is from a higher degree than another person’s. Is that true that there are degrees? Why are there degrees? Do the angels of the higher degree kinda have more “abilities” than those of the lower degrees?

Also, my great-great-aunt recently passed away and someone (who was consoling me) said, “Well now you have another guardian angel watching out for you!” Is that possible? I thought only angels can be guardian angels, not souls. Or do souls become angels too? I’m soo confused.

The Church teaches that priests are assigned another guardian angel through the sacrament of Holy Orders…

The guardian angels may be from different choirs, but I don’t think there is a definite teaching.

Human souls cannot become angels, but they can watch out for us.

The following are some notes I took when a local Priest talked about Angels.

Seraphim, have 6 wings, two to fly, two to cover face, two to cover feet.
Attendants of God’s throne.

Cherubim, man like and double winged. Have knowledge of God and praise Him.

Thrones or Ophanim, the lower choirs need tht ones to access God.

Dominions or Lordships, Angels of leadership, make known the commandments of God.

Virtues or Strongholds, have control of elements and charge of miracles.

Powers or Athoritys, warrior angels defending mankind.

Principalitys or Rulers, hostile to man and God

Archangels, messenger to mankind, feist day of Sept, 29th.

Angels, closest to material world and man.

I think most of theis comes from www.fisheaters.com

With something of theis nature there is a lot of speculation, so a lot of research would be needed to sort out what is accepted by the Catholic Church.

This is speculation. I’m not saying you’re wrong and they don’t have an extra guardian angel, but the Church does not “teach” this.

Even the ordering of the choirs of angels is speculation. The Church has actually taught relatively very little about the angels.

A person could certainly have more than one. But they might not. There’s no way to know right now but I’m sure we will in heaven if we persevere.

It’s also possible that a person’s guardian angel could be of a higher rank than another person’s. For example, one person’s could be a Seraph (traditionally the highest choir) while another’s could be an angel or an archangel (the two lowest).

We just don’t know.

Couple of notes.

Seraphim are “depicted” as having those physical attributes. They are incorporeal so they do not actually have wings unless they take a physical form and God wills that in a particular instance.

Also, not all principalities are hostile to man (demons). They are a distinct choir presumably having both angels and demons.

Thrones are believed to be in constant adoration before the “throne” of God.

Also, I’m mixed up now but some are believed to control the elements of nature, and some watch over the ordering of nations, geopolitics, etc.

Fascinating topic, glad that priest is talking on it!

You are correct. I should have said some saints teach this.

I agree, this is very interesting!

I never knew all the demons had their own ‘specialties’ too, I read that certain demons have certain knowledge and can and have taught some of this to mankind (the forbidden knowledge), I think there was about 9-10 subjects they taught to man, but man was not supposed to learn or use these. I can find a list of the demons names and what their particular knowledge specialty is, but they each have their own little ‘niche’, which kind of sparked my interest…Im curious why they would be like this?

Ahh…I see.
Thanks for the clarification. 🙂

Wow…thanks for the links–and the break down. 🙂

A lot of your questions have already been answered, but I’ll just elaborate.

There are nine choirs of angels, as another poster stated. These are, in order from highest to lowest- Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Powers, Virtues, Principalities, Archangels and Angels.

Every person has a guardian angel that is their own from conception to eternal life. Their guardian angel will even come to console them in Purgatory while they are there, until they can join them in heaven.

Guardian angels only come from the lowest choir, the angels.

A human being can never become an angel. Angels are an entirely different species.

Yes, some people have more than one angel assisting them- for example, the Pope has his own guardian angel as well as St. Michael the Archangel protecting and aiding him.

Many saints had their guardian angel as well as angels from another choir assisting them specifically for their mission. For example- St. Joan of Arc had St. Michael the Archangel to guide and help her along with her guardian angel. St. Faustina had a Seraphim escorting her whenever she left the convent. I believe it was also a seraphim who have her holy communion when she could not physically go to mass. A cherubim was once set outside her convent gates during a time of civil unrest. St. Michael also appeared to her to strengthen and assist her. St. Francis of Assisi was given the stigmata through a Seraphim, etc. etc.

There are nine ‘choirs’ of demons as well, as some angels from each choir rebelled against God. They apparently keep to their strict hierarchy even in hell, if private revelations and testimony from exorcisms are to be believed. No one knows for sure which choir Satan was from- there are debates among saints and theologians about this- some saying he was from the highest (the Seraphim) to others saying he must of been much lower as the highest choir of angels have the deepest knowledge of God.

Great further reading about angels-

St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica

Peter Kreeft, Angels and Demons: What Do We Really Know About Them?

My personal choice- Joan Carroll Cruz, Angels and Demons

St. Faustina, Divine a Mercy in My Soul, mentions the angels quite a bit, though not a theological work on them.

We do not know that guardian angels are only from the lowest choir. They may be of a higher order but it is believed by many saints and theologians that the vast majority are guardian angels.

Not only do people not become angels, but every single individual angel is its own species. Not each choir, but each angel is its own species, as it is incorporeal.

Is a Guardian Angel with a person even when they are in a state of mortal sin?
Can a person in such a state request their Angel pray for them?

They are always with us during this life even when in mortal sin.

Your Angel will always pray for you but I am not sure if you can receive certain Graces from God whilst in mortal sin.
