Ah yes, I had forgotten about Len Wein. I think he just wrote one issue of the new X-Men, or a few issues, before Claremont took over.

Personally I never understood why Stan Lee’s Uncanny X-Men wasn’t successful. I have read some of the early issues and I thought it compared favorably with the early Hulk, Avengers etc.

About Claremont, yeah he was a really gifted writer but he lacked a clear overall vision for the comic.

From what I read it was a conscious effort to cash in on the ‘teenager culture’ of the time. Perhaps they tried too hard?

I would have thought that was more true of Spider-Man. Peter Parker was an ordinary teen, coping with ordinary teen issues, when he wasn’t wearing his costume and fighting bad guys.

Which doesn’t mean that you’re wrong. Who knows what decision-making process the publishers of a comic book go through.

It’s funny because it could be said of most if not all of their titles at that time. Unless what it reflects is that the audience for the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, etc. were or were perceived to be smaller kids, and X-Men was intended for an explicitly teenage audience (just guessing here).

I think my source for this information was “Marvel Comics: the Untold Story” by Sean Howe.

Another bit of info from the same source regarding Spider Man was that they hired John Romita Jr. to do the art work specifically because he had a background in doing romance comics and they wanted to make Peter Parker’s love life a bigger part of the story (perhaps broadening his appeal beyond the usual demographic for costumed superheroes).

My dh and I saw a matinee showing of GOTG2 yesterday. Along with the ubiquitous chase scenes and shoot-outs, it raised some good questions about divinity–what it is and what it should be.

SPOILER ALERT!!!

Like the Q, Quill’s father is a “god”–a “celestial” as he calls himself. He was careful to say that it meant “small ‘g’ god,” which I thought a good point to make. As I believe, a powerful being might pose as God, but being God is another matter entirely.

Anyway, what are your thoughts about the film–about the divinity issue or anything else? 🙂

Right, it’s clear that Ego is in no way comparable to the God that Catholics (and Christians in general) worship. Ego, actually, is very aptly named, at least as portrayed in GOTG2 (I haven’t read the comics he’s in) – he’s power mad and only concerned with expanding his sphere of influence, and to heck with all other life in the universe.

I enjoyed the movie, but not sure if it was as good as the first.

When I was in the theatre (cinema, gotta be international) I think that was probably the most laughed at scene in the movie and it was definitely a funny movie. I mean not too long after that though talking about mood whiplash. I’ve always been more of a DC fan than a Marvel fan because of Batman but I don’t see why newer DC movies have been so horrible and the truth is the writers for both series of comic books are actually fans of the other they have mutual respect for the other. I think maybe DC should hire some Marvel writers if they haven’t already for the films. I don’t know I just think Marvel’s done a better job lately of making films that’s not say there just bad DC films it’s just to say there aren’t very many good recent ones. Anyway I encourage everyone to see the movie if you haven’t yet it’s worth the money take your date even if she or he hates comic book characters. I didn’t do that I want with my mom my step dad in my little sister’s my little sisters or 13 and 14 so they are in the right demographic for the movie considering its rating. Here in the United States it is PG 13
 
I loved Guardians 2.

Now with DC… I really did like Batman Begins, but overall, the new movies have talen themselves way too seriously.
 
Our kids took my wife and I to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in Imax 3D…very entertaining film. The opening seen with groot was very cute and funny. It’s a movie that made it worth admission for the one liners or the pseudo sacrificial Christian overtone.
 
I think the first Guardians movie had a stronger/better story than the sequel, but for pure entertainment, the second one was more entertaining.

I think that, like the first 3 Star Wars films, the middle film–the transitional story without resolution, felt much the same. It was the 3rd resolution film that was the weakest in the SW films, even though it was meant to emotionally satisfy and tie everything up. I think GOTG2 was meant to answer a few questions, to then allow the characters and story to move on from the establishment of the characters and universe in which the stories are taking place. We’ll see how it goes from here…

Mantis certainly has a presence in the film (especially second half) - though, Steve Englehart the creator of the Mantis noted the character he created was not portrayed properly in the movie. But he still enjoyed it.

The blunt description of Mantis from Drax had me in tears. Heh heh I didn’t expect the dialogue that transpired on screen.
