is there something that gives a guide to mass?

With the responses & motions? Maybe a video? And do’s and don’ts?

I went to my first mass tonight in 5 years, and boy am I rusty. 👍
 
I would suggest that you purchase a Sunday Missal! All the rubrics that attend to the lay person are there in red so you can follow it and know exactly what you are supposed to be doing when you are supposed to be doing it!

You will need to study that carefully as the rubrics for the laity are difficult to see. They are on the left in square brackets in small brown type.

A Missal is a little difficult to figure out on your own. There are several sections and you flip back and forth between them as Mass progresses. That’s what all the ribbons are for - so you can find your place quickly

The Order of the Mass with the Prefaces, Responses and Eucharistic Prayers

The Readings for Cycles A, B and C . We are currently in Year A for the Readings for Sunday Masses and Year II for Daily Masses if you have a Daily Missal.

and
Feasts of the Lord, Solemnities and Memorials.

Most churches in the States provide a Missalette (a small missal for the people published on a periodic basis) either at the back of the church as you enter or in the pocket at the pew with the hymnals. These are easier to follow. See if the church you attend has them.

You might try a copy of Magnificat. I find it easier to follow than the Missalette we have in my parish.

Most Catholic bookstores have them or you can order a sample copy from the publisher (no charge for one copy!) and see if that helps you. Look on the left menu bar for “request sample copy.”

I know it was made for children, however, my boys received “A Rememberance of My First Communion” published by the Daughters of St. Paul.

Inside is not only all the common prayers, how to say the rosary, the stations of the cross, AND a missal that is VERY specific with all the responses and postures.

It is very small and unobtrusive and is not decorated in a “childlike” manner.

It might be just what you are looking for!

A friendly poster offered this to me when I was looking for something similar. They have the Mass divided into sections, with explanations of what’s going on. I’m not sure about the do’s and don’ts…but I THINK it has them. You can preview the video online.

I have this video on my bookshelf and have never watched it. Fr. Stan is the rapping priest.
 
What used to drive me nuts was not having the music for the different parts of the mass like the “Lamb of God” and the “Holy, holy, holy Lord”, etc., as our music director would change them every so often.

I guess the answer is to go to mass more frequently to foster familiarity. 😃

I wholeheartedly second this suggestion. After I learned of Magnificat here on this forum, I ordered a subscription, and I love it so much. It is very intuitively ordered and there’s less flipping around and fumbling for the correct page than with the misselettes my parish provides.
 
I actually found today at my local thrift shop {not catholic} a copy of the 2006 saint jospeh sunday missal and prayerbook.

It’s got everything in it I was looking for - the complete order of mass.

Out of curiosity - I know the cycle changes with the year, but this missal is cycle B for 2005-2006 - will the one for the next cycle B year {next year} be the same? or do I need a new one yearly no matter what?

Just follow the rest of the congregation. It’ll be second nature before you know it.
