I think I just need some encouraging words and prayers. My sister took her life over Christmas and I can’t help but feel guilty. She suffered from SEVERE mental illness. I had tried to get her help many many times during her short life. She even lived with me, my husband and toddler (while I was pregnant) for almost a year. It was very difficult emotionally, financially, physically. She was psycotic during part of it. She lacked insight into her illness so was very resistant to getting help/taking meds. We eventually got her back on her feet with support from a doctor, psychiatrist, therapist, case manager, and medications. She was able to move out on her own and got a job. It was not long before she stopped her meds and I saw her spiraling out of control again. About this same time my husband and I moved our family several hours away from my sister. It was a move that was best for my immediate family, but less than 2 months later we lost my sister. We were her primary support system and I can’t help but wonder if maybe if we hadn’t moved she would still be here. I knew she wasn’t doing well (even before we moved) and I tried to get her help by taking her to her therapist and encouraging her to talk to her doctor about her medications. After we moved we kept in good contact and I continued to encourage her to get help but she wouldn’t. I couldn’t force her/trick her into getting help (like I had several times in the past - she would never go in voluntarily) so far away. I was also very busy trying to take care my own family (2 small children), starting a new job, illness, moving, etc. I just felt like after spending so much time and energy on her over the previous couple years I needed to focus on my husband and children. I told her she could not visit us for Christmas (she was acting delusional and I didn’t want her around my kids, also there are no mental health services where I live). She lost her job due to her psychotic behavior. We didn’t hear from her for several days so my mother went to check on her the day after Christmas and found her dead. We are all my mother has left as well and we moved farther from her also.
The primary driver of the move was to take jobs that would allow me to stay home more with my children which I felt I desperately called to do. Was it selfish of me to do this for my children at the expensive of my sister and mother? I just don’t know how I will ever come to terms with this. It doesn’t help that my 2 year old keeps telling me how much she loves and misses her aunt and wants her to come back. Is it worth having me at home more when what it took to make that happen possibly cost her relationship with her aunt? Deep down I know she was very sick and I couldn’t fix her, but these are the questions that keep going through my mind…
