Hello,
I was wondering if there was any document supporting the use of guitars and drums at mass. I know that Musicam Sacram says:
“63. In permitting and using musical instruments, the culture and traditions of individual peoples must be taken into account. However, those instruments which are, by common opinion and use, suitable for secular music only, are to be altogether prohibited from every liturgical celebration and from popular devotions.” adoremus.org/MusicamSacram.html
I know that Guitar and Drums are generally considered to be secular instruments, while organ and Gregorian chant are obviously almost completely for liturgical. I also know that our Holy Father has recently stopped contemporary music from being played at St. Peter’s.
However, I spoke to a Canon Lawyer the other day, and he said that using Guitar and Drums was perfectly fine (he didn’t explain why).
What does the Church say about this?
