Find a violent crime statistic that is worse in England.

Also consider we are talking about guns on a moral theology forum. The Church’s teaching on self defense is that proportional means, relative to the threat, must be used in self-defense. Since guns are intended to kill, looking at homicide rates seems rather appropriate.

Here is the problem. When I grew up, every farmer and rancher around had guns. They would have thought assault type weapons we’re completely absurd, heck my dad and uncle’s made fun of handguns. When I was a young adult, going to a shooting range, all you saw were deer rifles, and other traditional hunting weapons. Now it’s all ar-15s and military style weapons. Our gun culture has changed, drastically, in the last 30 years, not for the better.

I’ve never really gotten into the ARs. Shot one once, smooth as butter. But I’m old school, I guess. I like the hammer back on the Colt clone, and levering rounds through the Henry. I only have one semi, a Glock 23.

Tough to back up that claim.
England/Wales homicide rate is around 1/5 the of the USA’s.
(1) violent crime rate far higher in UK (rape, stabbings, robbery, etc)
(2) gun crime statistics in UK are a sham (when 4 people are shot, they count it as 1 incident, etc)

As a life long gun owner and political conservative, I find the arguments against increased gun control laws in the US exceedingly lacking.

So why has the homicide rate declined significantly in the last 30 years? Many of the most heavily armed places in the United States are the safest.

CCW holders and and FFL dealers are some of the most polite people I know.

As Tupperware as the Glock is, it’s definitely ergonomic and highly reliable. And comes in several perp-stopper calibers. Mine’s a “snappy” .40.

Every mass shooting takes place in a gun free zone for a reason. People can’t shoot back. Its just 101 common sense. If you’re a shooter, you won’t go somewhere that someone can defend themselves.

Take the Colorado Movie Theater shooter. He had plenty of movie theaters close to his house but drove to one far away. Why? It was the only one in his area that banned guns.

Because nothing deters a criminal quite like the thought that the prospective victim is armed and can defend themselves.

Can’t remember the last time I heard of a whacko perp shooting up a gun range…or a cop bar. 🤣

Russia has loads of other serious social issues including a horrendous abortion rate.

I live alone. I train regularly and I’m pretty sure my guns make any home invader less safe, not me. 😎

Your financee would never dream of questioning your authority eh? Check back in 5 years and see if you can still purchase anything you want without her blinking.

Outside the leftist US cities, many families have guns in the home. And there are many examples of successful defense against home invasion because of this.

A husband who owns a handgun is putting himself, his wife, and his children in greater danger than if he did not have one.
multiple weapons are available in the home to do lethal damage.
Women are not safer by owning guns. They are less safe.
What stats do you use to back this up? Years ago, I trained girls in a voyager crew to properly handle weapons from handguns to “assault weapons.” Many of them now own their own. I know that several went on to get their conceal carry permit and carry daily. How are these woman less safe?
Collectively, the USA needs to change this federally so that people cannot own handguns. Admittedly, having a gun free zone surrounded by an ocean of people that are (wrongfully) allowed to own and carry guns is not effective. A constitutional amendment wouldn’t be necessary because there is already legal precedent of banning various firearms. Most of the strong gun supporters that claim to be sticking closely to the constitution are adhering to a revisionist history that started when libertarians took over the NRA in the 1960s/1970s. American gun views aren’t only eccentric to the rest of the world but they are also eccentric to the majority of American history.
Sears used to sell guns in their catalog through the mail, what do you mean revisionist history? Guns were common in the city I lived in.
Where did you pull that stat from?

CSEW shows no change in the level of violence in recent years

There were an estimated 1.4 million incidents of violence experienced by adults aged 16 years and over in the latest CSEW survey for the year ending September 2018.
The FBI list violent crime numbers as 1,283,220 for 2017.

These numbers may seem the same but due to the different size of population England has a worse violent crime rate. Some say England counts violent crime different. They may, but not different enough to offset the large number.
Btw they have way fewer murders.
you do, but the number is going up
The police recorded 739 homicides in the latest year to September 2018, an 8% rise compared with the previous year…
An upward trend seen over the last four years contrasts with the previous downward trend since the introduction of the National Crime Recording Standard (NCRS) in 2002…
Protect oneself from crime? I don’t think so
happens all the time
