Gun Totting Catholic? Disagree with The Church on Gun Control

I couldn’t imagine seeing a firearm as a first line of defense. It is the last line. (Or pretty close to it.)

My son is a LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) and his average responds time is 12 minutes and that is IF the victim is able to call. Several very fine weapons are the SIG Sauer P220 handgun, the Heckler and Koch sub-machine gun and the SIG SG550 Assault Rifle. These are the weapons of choice of the Vatican Swiss Guard. I wonder if Our Holy Father minds that they are carrying such firepower…

Police generally don’t *prevent *this type of crime. They merely enforce the laws once they are broken. Like others have mentioned. After 2008, many departments have laid off police officers, or reduced their numbers through retirement or other attrition. Subsequently, response times are slower across our country. This includes Fire Departments and Paramedics. So…🤷

As a modern examples of this theory working:

Switzerland - Swiss were so heavily armed to a man that the Nazi’s avoided the whole country. To this day, most Swiss homes have a semi automatic gun and significant ammo.

Israel - Israel’s surrounded by enemies, and is pretty much the only democracy in the region and it’s population is heavily armed.

Finland - The Soviet Union quickly learned to leave Finland alone when even the citizens fought back. At the time, the Soviets had the largest army in the world right on Finland’s borders.

Counter examples:

Pol Pot disarmed his citizens and killed millions of them. Hitler, Stalin, and Mao did the same thing after disarming their citizens.

Given the track record and the evidence, I would think it logical to want to be in the former category (Switzerland, Finland, USA, and Israel) and not the latter (USSR, China, Cambodia, Nazi Germany)

BTW Canada has as many guns per person as the USofA and a lot less gun crime and violent crime than our southern neighbours.

It’s probably because we are so polite!

I have a few guns and go shooting at a gun club every now and then. It’s amazing how polite people are in that environment!👍

Re: packing guns to reduce crime. I believe l’ve read the statistic that most homeowners who get shot by an intruder get shot by their own weapon.

That being said racking an 870 on the landing can sure clear a hallway. Or so I’ve been told:p

Finally: if there’s a Zombie Apocalypse then all bets are off! Get armed STAT!

One thing I am getting more concerned about is that recently every person with a notepad and a right to “fine” you for something (parking, bylaws, dog poop, stray cat etc) is now a Peace Officer with a sidearm and a taser, and cherries and berries on their vehicle.

I think we’re beginning to be over policed.

As a citizen of the United States, I could probably make the same statement about our southern neighbors. Perhaps we filter some of it from ever reaching our northern neighbors.

BTW I live in a border state and you guys are polite. I’ll consider ya a good neighbor…as long as you keep allowing me to fish your great lakes…aye! 👍

I am hoping you don’t think that police show up in seconds, when called. Instead that the police take even longer.

Most police response times are in minutes, not hours.

Just as a clariication, what is present in most Swiss homes is a FULLY AUTOMATIC assault rifle. Generally a SIG SG 510 or 550.

Those are issued to every male between 21 and 32. And the government will even sell it to you for a small fee after the issue time is over.

Women are not required to own the firearms, like men are, but are encouraged to do so.

They are also required to do military service every year until the age of 40 - the 2 go hand in hand (literally!) gun + service.

Try buying a handgun in Switzerland!
