Hi everyone,

I’m not really sure what I’m looking for here. But this happened a few months ago, and I just remembered it. I was at a funeral, and some of my friends were downstairs in the funeral home just chatting. There’s a guy there who’s pretty clearly atheist. He seems to have this attitude that he’s the smartest person ever and knows everything. One day over a year ago, (I rarely see this guy), he was talking to someone and he said he doesn’t believe in God, but he believes in science or something like that. In the funeral home, someone asked me what communion is. I knew there were few if any Catholics there, so I was a bit reluctant to talk about it, but I did anyway. And I explained that we believe the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ, then we eat it. Anyway, this guy I’m talking about said something like, “oh… that’s when the priest mumbles a few words is it… yeh… I think they do something like that in japan too…”

I’m really angry at that kind of comment. He’s so snooty and just wants to downplay the Eucharist. I’m just wondering how you guys react to things like that or if you’ve ever come across it.

Thanks,
Phil

I pray for those who were not given the gift of faith. I pray that their lives will be touched and they will return to their Father. Its the best weapon. All my rosaries are prayed for the conversion of souls.

Jesus said, If the world hates you realize that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you. Remember the word I spoke to you.

Pray, fast, penance, go to mass…this is the best response!

Blessings and peace,

Kimberly

Japan? What was he smoking?

This guy has no clue what he’s talking about. I would have asked him what he’s talking about, as far as Japan goes? Was he making a reference to some practice in Buddhism or Shinto or Taoism? 🤷

The ideal way would be to suddenly transform into a calm, cool-minded apologist on the spot!

It’s impossible for everyone to be that, and we usually let our emotions get to us (I am definately one to let such comments get under my skin.)

However, it sounds like he was leading you on with the way he started with an innocent-sounding question about the Eucharist, and then you fell into his insult trap. Knowing me, I’d probabaly call him out on that and just walk away when he’s done getting into my face and spewing profanities, as it has happened before.

I remember I was my brother’s sponsor at his Confirmation a few years ago, and a guy behind me, during the Consecration, mentioned to the kid he was sponsoring that the Eucharist looks like “a torilla” and they both laughed. I turned around and gave him a look (I’m not some old crabby granny either, I’m a 23 y.o guy) and he shut up.

But you can’t judge because he’s judging you. You can alert him to that, but you can’t write him off. Best thing to do is pray for him. Remember those WWJD wristbands?

Of course it’s done in Japan, and in nearly every other country in the world! The Catholic faith is practiced there too, and so therefore you could correctly say, “Why yes, it is!”
This singular opinion is no threat to your faith, if you remember that there is unity in the Catholic Church, and that all over the world, you can find a parish and attend the same, uniform mass you can at home, and no one negative person can take that away.
😉

Since I’m an old granny, I couldn’t resist replying. When one of my six comes up with similar remarks, I simply smile.
Though there are times when I do add that “look” as you did.

Another thing I’ve done–when another sibbling would come up with wierd things like life is kismet, I would encourage him to keep thinking and keep searching and then shut my mouth.
This kid did keep thinking and searching and now his spiritual life in the Catholic faith is far beyond my own.

Point is, as my Irish mother would say, there are many ways to skin a cat.

God bless you and others for caring about people.
