Habits?

Okay…I don’t know if you ever had a question like this, but how thick is the part of the habit that goes on the head? The reason why I’m asking is I wear a cochlear implant. If I wear a headdress(?), it’d have to be thin enough for the magnet to stay in the correct place on my head.

Also, is the habit headdress quite loose, or does it bind tightly to the head (like a winter hat)? If it’s loose, I won’t have to worry as much about feedback and accidentally changing the settings and stuff like that. If it’s form fitting, well…I guess I’ll just look for a order that doesn’t require the wear of the headdress.

(Also, please correct me if I’m using the wrong terms to describe things!)

I’m sure whatever order in which you might take your final vows would have a way to make its wimple and veil compatible with your implant. It certainly shouldn’t be a primary reason for choosing an order, though. It will be one of the things you will have to work through as a part of your discernment process.

I guess I keep assuming the rules are strict and unbending, and I have to keep reminding myself that Catholicism is a living religion. I’m glad to hear that different orders might be willing to work with me I definitely don’t want my implant/hearing aid to rule out anything that might be what God’s calling me to

I assume your are speaking of the veil that accompanies the habit of some religious sisters or nuns. Many do not cover the ears, and in any case I am sure a modification would be made to accomodate your need. I would certainly not make that the basis for choosing which orders to investigate. If you have a genuine vocation for a particular order, those problems will resolve themselves. First work on discerning the vocation.

Find an order that feels like a good fit for the type of spiritual expression God is calling you to. Then ask questions about dress, exceptions for medical issues and so on.

Thank you! You might not believe it, but that’s the best advice I’ve heard about vocations!
It prompted me to start looking into the ministries and charisms of various orders…I’m into the D’s now, and taking notes on the ones that seem promising

I know a Little Sister of the Poor who has cochlear implants, and she has no problems. They wear a veil which hits at the middle of their ears. It has been wonderful to see her transformation pre and post-surgery…such a lively soul now that she can hear and interact with the world around her so much better! God provides…

You do?! That is so cool! I’ve always worried about being a financial burden on the Church, but if one is already a sister, well, you just made me happy!

God really does provide; after I got my implant I became my class vice president, coordinated a Student Votes program, ran concessions for a whole football season, became prom princess twice in a row…etc etc. and that was just in high school. It definitely has helped me to become a better part of the world *

Not all congregations wear a veil. For example, the Servants of God’s Love in Michigan, and the Society Devoted to the Sacred Heart, in California, do wear uniform habits, but no veils.

Some religious orders can be very accommodating indeed and willing to work with you. I know of one Order of strictly enclosed nuns of perpetual adoration who spend one half hour daily kneeling in front of the Blessed Eucharist in Adoration. One of the novices is on crutches permantly (for life) and she can sit for Adoration.

Dont be discouraged if some Orders are not happy about the implant…and rest very assured and in Peace that if God is calling you to the religious life you will find an Order where the implant is not problematic. And perchance if you could not find one, it may mean with simplicity that God simply is not calling you to religious life. If He were, the implant would not be problematic and you would be able to find an Order to work with you. But dont give up as long as you desire to be a religious and you have not exhausted all avenues of enquiry.

Many religious orders today have modernized the veil and the coif, crown band and wimple are no longer used. Some too have modernized the habit as well.

There are many good resources found on the various forums to enable you to begin your search. A good spiritual director is a great asset [and a necessary one at some point… the sooner the better]
Good luck on your search and keep asking questions… as you can see there are so many folks here willing to help
