Had a few drinks last evening - did I commit a mortal sin?

What is considered excess? I am guessing it will be different for every person. While I am sitting in my living room at night and don’t have to work, I may drink 3 or 4 beers over a period of an hour to two…I might feel the effects of alcohol. During this time I definitely don’t want to commit even a venial sin and am constantly aware of my thoughts and I definitely want to please God. I see beer as a way to be merry and that God has blessed us with…I for sure don’t want to be drunk, but it does help me relax. It is not something I do everyday, just occasionally. I hope it is not sinful. My goal in this life is to serve Jesus Christ as best as I know how.

Speaking of the Wedding at Cana, however… if you’ll recall, the master of the banquet told the bridegroom that “everyone uses the good wine first and give the cheap wine after the guests have had too much to drink, but you have saved the good wine until now.” This implies that Christ turned water into wine after people had already had enough to drink that they couldn’t discern good wine from cheap wine. I’m thinking that’s at least 2-3. If drinking more than 2-3 (in a situation where no one is going to go drive or something) is a sin, then Christ was implicit in a whole bunch of sin.

Let me add that when I joined the Church, our wonderful priest had a party in the basement with copious amounts of wine or beer. In a Church. If I wasn’t sure I had found the right religion, I knew then!!

Last evening, after we put our son to bed, my wife, my mom and I sat on our back porch, had nice conversations and had a few mixed drinks. We each had three glasses. We didn’t get drunk, but I know I started to feel the effects. Was that still in moderation?

Feeling elevated is one thing, getting smashed is another. As long as you don’t get intentionally smashed then your fine.

Even if you did get smashed intentionally, the fact you are asking if it is a mortal sin, shows that since you do not know that it is, therefore it is not a mortal sin.
