Two questions: First, what exactly does “Mary” mean in Greek/Hebrew? I have heard it means “excellent.” Is this true? What significance does this have for Mariology? Second, and most important, I have noticed that traditional Catholic bibles translate Lk 1:28 as “Hail, Mary, full of grace…” However, most other bibles say something different, most typically, “Greetings, favored one…” (NRSV) “Full of grace” has a lot more significance, I think, than “favored one.” “Full of grace” goes a longer way to support doctrines like the immaculate conception, ever virgin, and the assumption, than “favored one.” So, what is the truth of the matter? Is is “full of grace” or “favored one”? What’s the best translation/exegesis here and WHY?
